I have a 2003 Ranger XLT FX4. When I shift into 4WD It sounds like it is straining a bit (loud humming), But when I try to switch back into 2wd not only does it hesitate (up to 15 sec) but it makes a very loud bang or clunk. Loud enough to scare and hard enough to feel. Can anyone help??

what general area does this noise come from? Front end or transfer case?

It has only happend once and I am leary of trying again, but i would say in the area of my feet?

I would start with the transfer case. Mine does this sometimes, only going into 4 low.
