Lost the keys for my 88 but the doirs were unlocked. Been attempting to drill the ignition lock cylinder out of the column, and the pin is drilled out but the cylinder won't come out. What am I missing?

Pull the column shrouds, and look on the bottom of the cylinder. Is this the pin that you are referring to? You also have to drill pretty deep in to the switch housing itself. When you hit steel, then the lock can be pulled.

Yes that's the pin I'm referring to, it's completely drilled out. So I have to drill into the key slot where the tumblers are?

You may need to break the chrome or black bezel off where the key goes in with a screwdriver or pliers, then (in the key slot) take a drill with a 3/8 bit and drill the tumblers out, then the cylinder will turn.:icon_thumby:

Also, if you go to the junk yard, find 32 keys in that style, the odds of you finding at least one that will work your locks are very very good.

The easier way to solve this problem would have been to call AAA if you carry their coverage or if you know someone who is a member with them. I did that for a truck years back, they sent a locksmith out who made a new key for me on the spot, no charge.

What Lil Blue says. Then you drop by his shop and have 3 more keys made. My style would be to booger up the whole column, then find the key.
The ignition lock is wearing out because I have a jack knife on the key ring. I can give the bezel a good twist and I can feel it give. In a while I hope it will will be like the Wags . 4 of them didn't need a key. It was a GM part and GM has even less different tumblers than Ford. I would have messed around with it. Before taking a drill to it. Oh well, its only an old, orphan Ford. :D

looks like i messed up the column trying to get the cylinder out. So now i'll be replacing the column.

Does it have to be a column from a 5 speed Bronco II or Ranger? (My rig is 5 speed). Or can I use an automatic column and cut the gear shift selector lever.

you'd have to do something about the steering lock. Not good if it locked while you were driving.

this is why I have 3 sets of keys for each of my rigs.... one set for me, one for my wife and a spare set I keep in my wallet... I have locked my keys in too many times so I do it this way

Yeah well unfortunately I'm past the point of talking about how many spares I should have..

That would be a problem if you lost the keys. Good thing if you have duplicate keys.
