My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
I lost the keys to my 99 Continental, need to get the transmission into neutral so I can drag it out of the road where the tow truck driver dropped it. I figure if I can get it into neutral I can drag the front wheel around enough to get it into the grass.

pop the linkage off the tranny and put it into neutral.

can that be done with an electronic transmission? is there a way to provide power to the ignition with out a key?

I have no way to get the car high enough to get under it, my floor jack is broken and the continental's jack is missing.

If it has a remote starter there will be more than likely be a key somewhere inside the car, either near the ignition barrel or inside a box under the dash.

no remote start. Just tried putting power on the fuse number 3 and fuse number 4 in the power distribution box and I got everything hot, but it would not come out of neutral. Apparently the car is smarter than that. I am just going to barrow a dolly tomarrow and move it.

There's probably a mechanical interlock from the ignition lock to the shifter somewhere as well as the interlock that is activated by the brake light circuit. Is it a floor or column shift?

center console shift. there must be a signal from the key because I powered the ignition..... had gauges, fuel pump buzzing, and the automatic lights came on. stepped on the brake (that should have activated the brake light switch) and it still won't come out of park. just going to move it early in the morning with a dolly.

The factory leaves a spare somewhere?? If so I want to find mine.

No no, he's talking about some hack job remote start installer that puts a spare pats key inside the column near the ignition instead of installing a proper pats bypass module so it will start without a programmed pats key in the ignition.

If you look under the hood there might be a rod that connects from the column to the transmission, that's how they used to do it. If that's the case just disconnect the rod, power up what circuits you can and try it again.

This has an electronic transmission. There is no linkage.

Its alright the problem is solved. I got it on the dolly and moved it. Waiting on my new key from ford.

It's just your average run of the mill AX4N transmission, and has a shift cable.

External Controls

The transaxle shift control linkage consists of:

  • a steering column of floor-mounted transaxle range selector lever.
  • a connecting the column to the transaxle range selector lever.
  • an on floor-shift vehicles which connects the transaxle range selector lever to the steering column lock assembly.
The ignition/shifter interlock cable:

  • locks the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
  • requires the transaxle range selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

yeah it has a manual cable for park and range still in 99

just have to move the air tubes and box to get to it easily.
