Hi Everyone.
I have a quick question that maybe one of you can assist me with before taking the truck in to a tramission shop. This is for my 1989 Ranger XLT 2.9 V6 5spd
I've noticed that when speeding up (to merge on the freeway for example) and i shift into 4th gear, i can hear something either rubbing together (not a bad squeak or anything) and I lose power, decrease speed for a few seconds, and i see my RPM's FLARE up to about 3-4k...
as the RPM's drop back to 2-3k, that is when the "gear" somewhat catches and I can then upshift to 5th and get into highway speeds.
my question is, can I "lose" only 4th gear? 1-3 are fine, 5th gear is not a problem, just 4th.
again when I first shift into 4th it flares up like crazy, so i'll lay off just a tad on the accellerator and then it catches, but I don't have this issue with any other gears (including reverse).
I dont shift hard or slam gears or race or anything... perhaps some planetary gear not engaging properly?
I do notice that when i shift into fourth, it makes a much smoother transition and doesn't make any noises like the other gears.
just wanted to know if anyone had experienced anything like this, or if i may have to be looking for a new manual tranny.
perhaps changing the gear oil? I HIGHLY DOUBT it would be the clutch, as all other gears are fine?
thoughts?
