Loose steering

1996 GMC Jimmy 4WD.

Steering wheel will move between 10-2 oclock before the truck starts to respond. I believe it is rack and pinion steering. What's the common issue? I've never worked on this type of steering before.

Sounds like the rack itself might be bad. Look at the tie rod ends first though.

1996 should have rack, chevys are baaad about idler arms and center links wearing out.
