lookn to boost my 99 3.0 ranger

damn, what is wrong with you people? there is nothing wrong with wanting to build a strong 3.0. its not only a strong, reliable base capable of plenty of power with the right mods, but everyone and their brother has the "all powerful" 4.0 and thinks they are hot shit.

build it, then go put some 4.0 guys in their place.

whipple was the only company that made a blower kit for the 3.0...but other supers have been made to work. eatons are popular, and ive seen a few centrifugal supers in use as well. head studs, cam, some GOOD head work, overbore, injectors...all for starters. another option if your willing to put your money where your mouth is, is tom morana's 3.3 stroker kit. a long block will run you about as much as a long block v-8 motor....but you get forged internals, 3 angle valves, port matching, balancing, hardened pushrods, rollers, ect. ive yet to see or hear of someone running one of these motors...so it would definitely be unique....and what an excellent base for a high boost motor. with a good turbo, a guy could easily get 400HP out of that motor.

um....yeah.

supercharge a 4.0 SOHC.

It'd be absolutely over the top.

or for the money just build a 302 for supercharger and drop it in....and ahve money left over for ur box bronco rears built balls to the walls

untill it blows a timing chain tensioner.

3.0 = reliable power

I don't see a lot of RBVs in shops.....while I don't doubt there was at least a period of defective original tensioners, whats keeping all the other 4.0's running anyway?

the same thing that keeps currently running 2.9's and A4LD's on the road...

just because a design is defective and/or weak doesnt mean all examples are going to break down at the exact same time...or even at all. but why take the risk? the SOHC's hydraulic timing chain tensioners are notoriously problematic.

i would get the 4.0 ( people wreak these trucks up here alot i could just swap the whole motor and tranny for 500) but i like building the underdog motor. and the budget it correct. while the army may not pay much, they lovwe giving out huge bonuses.

The OP stated their reason's for wanting to build the 3.0 so why are you guys sticking alternative scenario's in his face? Respect his wishes for what he wants to build. It sounds like he has a good reason for wanting to stick with the 3.0 so just leave it at that. While displacement is very nice, it is not everything. Boost counts for allot as well. Mind you this is coming from a guy who usually prefer's V8's and has more than 1,000 hp on tap between the two vehicles in the garage. I am no stranger to power, but sometimes sheer power is not everything. Sometimes it comes to personal preference. Respect that...

My suggestions to the OP would be:

1) Built bottom end. Possibly stroked out if it is not stupid expensive.

2) P&P heads

3) Your choice of forced induction...

For #3 it all depends on what kind of power you want. That will determine which kind of FI you go with.

Positive Displacement superchargers, such as the roots (Eaton) and twin screws (Whipple, Kenne Bell, so on) will provide allot of low end grunt from idle to the upper portion of the mid-range. Once you start getting into the the higher engine RPM's the blower's tend to lose some steam unless they are sized slightly large for your combo.

Centrifugal superchargers provide more of linear power increase that gradually builds with engine rpm. It is not the strongest feeling off the line but once the blower is spinning a little faster then it will pull like a freight train till redline.

Turbo's....Well a turbo will produce more power per pound of boost than both the PD blower or the centri supercharger. It will have the strong midrange of the PD blower while also having the top end of the centrifugal blower. Honestly most properly setup turbo systems will make more midrange power and top end power than the other two blowers. Turbo's are total monsters once spooled up. If you have the turbo sized correctly to your application then you will have the spool time you prefer while also having the kind of top end power that you prefer also.

4) Fuel system. Make sure you have a fuel system that is able to support your power. It is not a bad thing to go slightly overboard here as this will only create a safety buffer zone so you do not run out of fuel while in boost.

5) Transmission... Have fun...

6) Depending on the rear end you have currently it might be worthwhile to upgrade this too. I didn't notice what you said you plan to use this vehicle for so that would determine what advice was given for any axle upgrades.

Now for the fun talk. Budgeting the project. Unless you have done larger projects before the planning can get sticky real quick if you do not have a rock solid idea of how much things should cost. You mentioned a $15k budget so I recommend that you pretend that you only have about $10-$12k tops in your budget. The reason for this is there are ALWAYS unforseen expenses that pop up at the last moment. The reserved money will assist in offsetting this. DO NOT TOUCH THAT OTHER MONEY! It will be your lifeline if/when something pops up. Once the project if 100% done then you can think about using whatever might be left from your "unforeseen expenses" fund.

Good luck with the build.

now now, no need to get sour :icon_cheers:

OK....I'm sorry.

I tell you what.....if they made a four liter vulcan, I'd buy it. But the 3600RPM torque peak would still be pointless.

(that was my version of being peaceable LOL)

Well Said

after lookn around, the only weak point would be the tranny and rear axle. but havn a dad who is a master machinist is very helpful. we have a machine in our shop that could machine a car out of a soild hunk of metal, its about as big as a single wide trailer. ohh and on a side note i just boutgh a 96 blazer that will be getn the same treatment as the ranger, but its getn a 350 and i hope to make about 700 hp outa that one

You sure have allot of potentially very expensive projects for a 20 year old. You are bound to not be very senior in the Army just yet. If you are moving up quick then maybe you are a SGT at best. Even that E-5 pay is not enough to allow you to easily afford both of these projects comfortably; unless you have some other means of income. Pick one or the other and put the rest of your money to good use elsewhere.

Big power car projects get expensive quick.

dad owns a machince shop and builds chevy motors for fun. and since im reinlisting and reclassn to eod im gonna get a pretty large bonus. i also do my own work so that saves alot of money. i also own a 76 dodge w100 with a 440 in it, that truck is getn a four link front and back, but im gona leave the 440 alone since it was just rebuilt and is makn plenty of power
