looking forward to retirement?

i put my name on the list for the early retirement the government is offering here at work. i don't know if i will actually take but i wanted to get my name on as a place holder in case my wife gets medically retired. if she gets it, i will probably go also.

the minimum requirement was 50 years old. i turned 50 the day before the cut off date. 25 years of gov service in april so i am ok with trying something else.

another reason to go is if i leave now, its only 400 less a month than if i have to stay till i am 57. thats not a lot of money for the bs you deal with working for the federal government and the army

I can add this - I look up and realize I have been 'retired' for 2 years now. What does that mean? I used to work 3 days a week if lucky, plenty of weeks with no work (it was video production, and that's always been pretty scarce for most of us).

And now? 7 days per week, no pay, and rarely any thank you - my wife is the exception, very kind words. I just bounce from one part of the country to another in my ½ ton pickup, most of my tools in tow. Stuff breaks in family member's homes and vehicles faster than I can keep up with any of it.

I have asked my gravestone to say "he was never bored".

I retired in 2010 @ 62 from state gov then went back as a consultant to them. I made more money in retirement than full time employment? I finally quit the consulting work in 2020 when Covid hit and never regret it. I used the first 10 years to work on projects I had ignored for years. I can't do much physical work anymore so my advice is to go for retirement early and enjoy the freedom.
