Hello fellow Ranger enthusiasts.

A quick one sentence summary for those that don’t like to read:
Is the flowmaster super 40 a decent exhaust choice for an upgraded sound on my daily driver that wont irritate other people and wont irritate me with too much drone?

The Rest:
Recently ended up with an exhaust leak and when I took it to a recommended local shop for a quote, it came up in conversation that I wish my Ranger’s (4.0 SOHC) exhaust had a little bit of life to it. Based on what I told them, they recommended the flowmaster super 40.

Now, everyone’s opinion on exhaust tone/volume/tolerable drone/etc is going to be different. That much is obvious on browsing threads here and elsewhere.

However, I’d like to get some opinions that are at least a bit more geared toward my specific situation.

What I told the shop I wanted was “an exhaust note that can actually be heard, but isn’t going to bother anyone”. What came to mind for me was how it sounded on a cold start in the middle of PA winter.

Something important I neglected to mention to the shop, which I will before Saturday’s appointment, is that this is my daily driver and I don’t want to have to deal with an annoying drone in the cabin.

You may say “why not just stick with what you have if that’s all you’re looking for?”. Fair point… however… I live in a place where rust and salt is plentiful. The muffler isn’t lookin great and I’d rather just hit it all now. They quoted me 390 to fix the leak and throw on the super 40 which sounds good to me. I just want to make sure that it’ll literally sound good to me.

All opinions/suggestions are welcome.

are you not a bot?

dynomax. magnaflow. borla. last would be flowmaster. but it is a fair product.

My Choptop had a regular 40 series on it when I got it. I liked the sound. Super 40 and Super 44 are both supposed to be good sounding as well. When I got new exhaust put on my Choptop I told the shop I wanted all stainless and a 40/super40/super44 muffler. The owners kid insisted on wanting to put a 10 series on it. I’m not a fan of the sound. It sounds ok at idle, a little quieter than expected, but it gets loud and a little annoying when you’re on it.

I’ve had a few el-cheapo Thrush Turbo mufflers on various vehicles. They sound alright but the salt and stuff around here has a tendency to reduce them to a pile of rust in short order.

My green Ranger has a Magnaflow on it. Sounds awesome but it’s also got a 5.0 with headers, lol. It’s a bit louder than I intended and it’s sort of a straight through crossover muffler (which eliminates the need for an X or H pipe in a dual exhaust).

i prefer the dynomax welded.

but lil blue is a PA resident and his opinion and experience i would defer to. cops hate my truck in PA.

I will admit to not having tried Dynomax or Borla and my only experience with Magnaflow has been on the 5.0 with true duals (dads 00 Ranger is also 5.0 swapped with duals and a Magnaflow crossover muffler but no headers and is noticeably quieter than mine despite the same muffler).

Stainless everything is the way to go in PA. Everything else rots some degree of quickly. The welded mufflers (non stainless) hold up better than the crimped mufflers like the Thrush, but a stainless welded muffler is the pinnacle.

The “aluminized” stuff tends to last 2-3 years around here for exhaust tube. I’ve been using a local custom exhaust shop around here for years to make stainless exhaust for me, but I think once I have my garage up (and maybe before then) I’d like to get an exhaust bender and start doing my own because the local shop, the son of the owner is becoming difficult to deal with and the father is mostly retired at this point (the father was amazing, I watched him hold a pipe up, make a couple marks on it with a dirty finger, go bend it up and stick it in place, no anfgle finder, no measuring, just 100% eyechrometer).

Man, that seems like the case for too many small businesses and it sucks. Great previous owners, then handed off to the kids who are not so great. But, perhaps they’ll learn in time. No telling what the parents were like when they first started. If you’re in western Pa let me know when you start, may stop by.

I’ve read around a decent bit before posting, and generally speaking people tended to lean towards the super 40 being a bit quieter and having less drone than the original 40.

How was the volume and drone on your 40? Im trying to get a decent sound, but not bother anybody driving or walking next to me. To each their own, but I’d hate to be that guy. Also don’t want drone that’ll have me slapping a new “oem” muffler on afterwards. Which is honestly something I’m open to if its not really feasible.

I’m north of Pittsburgh, roughly 45 minutes or so from the actual city. Near Butler City as it is and my one mechanic buddy is up in the city area so I’m up there a bunch.

Personally, I don’t mind a little noise as long as it isn’t obnoxious so I thought the 40 series was pretty good. I’d definitely buy another 40 series. The 10 series is a bit obnoxious but I’ve been living with it because I’ve had other things that needed my attention and money more. The Super 44 will probably be the quietest. Supposedly it sounds pretty good with our motors and it’s been on my list of ones to try.

I’d say you could stop up and listen to what I have, but right now the only thing I can let you listen to is the Thrush on dad’s 99 Ranger and the 10 series on my Choptop. F-150 currently has a massive exhaust leak in addition to other things and the Green Ranger is tore apart and can’t be started until I put it back together. Everything else either isn’t running or isn’t here (and also isn’t running, lol). Mom’s Explorer is bone stock.

I think the flowmaster 40 series delta flow is what I ordered for my 5.0l swap. Dual with an h-pipe. I’m looking forward to it.
