Attempting a motor swap in my 85 bronco II. Nothing Cazy, 2.8 liter. One block is stamped 5 83, the other 9 84 back by the distributor. The problem I am having is that the motor and tranny will not fully meet. Torque convrter and fly wheel will not allow it. My self and many others checked and rechecked the converter and it is all the way in. Used all the original parts, (torque conv., flywheel, spacer) so I am baffled why it will not go together. Even checked the pump shaft in thanny to make sure it is all the way in, I guess on some trannys they come out. Does not seem like it is removable, just very small amount of movement in and out. If anyone out there knows what is up I would greatly appreciate your knowledge. Thanks in advance. My name is Don by the way. New to the forum.

Is the torque converter fully seated into the pump?

Have you looked at the condition of the pilot bearing?

It's been a long time since I've done any work like this but I suspect the torque converter not being seated all the way. There should be three distinct clunks as it moves inward. For a few years I believed only two but have learned better. This knowledge is with c-6 trans but should apply to yours as well.

so many people make the rookie mistake of not taking the torque converter, and fully installing/seating it into the transmission, before attempting to mate the engine to it.

you should only bolt the t/c to the flexplate after the engine is bolted to the bellhousing.

The torque concverter is bottoming out. One thing ghat might help to know is the converter was removed attached to the motor due to the fact motor was siezed.

My uncle thought maybe the pump shaft may have come out some but I am unable to move it in or out, just turn it.

You have to lightly push in on the TC as you rotate it before you get it up to the engine. There should be several clicks and it will go farther into the bellhousing with every click.

Then you have to cross all your fingers and toes as you wrestle it in there in hopes that the awkward transmission doesn't shift and let the TC move around enough to make you have to reset the TC.

Three clicks sounds right, its been 11 years since I have installed an A4LD though.
