and what is the price on one of these lockers

The lock when you supply sufficient power. Price depends on what axle you have and if it's new or used. Expect to pay $200-350.

Yeah, you could put it that way I guess... They are what is commonly referred to as a 'lunchbox locker' or 'drop-in locker.' New I think they run about $200-350, but they can be had used for up to half that. I found mine on eBay.

so if i found the Powertrax lockright kit on ebay it'll just drop into my current open diff 8.8/28 carrier and toss the open diff spider gears and stuff?

Well, you need one that fits your specific axle. But other than that, if you pulls the shafts and spider gears, they more or less "drop in". Take you time and read the directions, and you'll get it.
