I need to replace the lockouts on my 96 Ranger, I have little experience, is this something I could do myself? Does the job require special tools? What is the procedure?

For automatic lockouts, you need a magnet. That's it. A pickup tool works great. There is a special hub socket, but the torques are so light that you can do it (carefully!) with a slip joint pliers.

For manual lockouts, you need a (different) hub socket and a torque wrench.

In both cases, you can pop the spring clip off with a pair of screwdrivers.

And of course appropriate sockets and torque wrenches to get the wheels off.
