Hey guys, Ive got a question.

My 94' STX LOVES to lock the rear brakes :3gears:. it happens all the time under mild-heavy braking.... its becoming dangerous :pissedoff:. I can lock it up really easy. I checked the rear drums and pads, everything is fine. Could it be the Proportioning valve? Master cylinder? I need help as this is my first Ranger.

Howdy and welcome to TRS~!

Could be a number of things happening but if there is a proportioning valve in there that might be a good reason. Could also be overly tightened rear brakes also and backing off the star wheel adjuster would be the first place to start if it were my truck.

This can be done without removing the drums but is actually easier with the drums off...I like to see it back things off and watch for the shoes to do a bit of slip out...

Could also need brake grease on the shoe contact points if they haven't been done properly...and check the springs and other hardware for rust or sticking points...I usually slap them back and forth a few times to make sure they are moving and that they don't fly apart.

did you do the rear brakes yourself or someone else?

+1

The return-springs and star-wheel would be my bet. I'd also remove everything from the rear drums and grease and reinstall them from a known proper photo/diagram. Could be your return springs are not in the correct places?

P.S. I'm digging your awesome Stompin' Tom Connors avatar. :icon_thumby:
