Locker/Hub Question

I have a '99 4.0l super cab with PVH hubs that is my daily driver in winter and light wheeler the rest of the year. I will also add a 3" body lift and run 31's or 33's.

I would like to improve my off road performance with a front locker (Powertrax lock-right most likely). Can I run a front locker U]AND[/U] convert to the later model live axle or would this cause drivability issues on the road? With a locker would I be better off to replace the hubs with AVM hubs?

I'm looking for input on this plan from the more experienced wheelers.

Thanks

You would be better off converting to the AVM manual hubs than running the later model live hubs regardless of whether you ran a locker or not. The PVH are not that reliable, and the live hubs create drag that can reduce fuel mileage. Running a front locker with the live front hubs won't reduce drivability on the road because the locker remains unlocked until power is applied to it. The only thing that would happen is you would get a mild clicking sound coming from the front end while cornering or turning from the locker ratcheting. That and the locker would wear out faster than if you had free hubs because it will always be ratcheting unless you're driving straight.
