Locked keys in truck :o

Well I know the "secret" has been posted before. I think the true answer is to have a spare key in your billfold. Week and a half ago, lock my doors, keys on the seat. 200 miles from home in a town of 200 late on a Friday night. Ended up being able to open the sliding window of the cap, tried kicking out the slider into the cab. Ended up being able to get the jack out and just break the rear quarter window with it Felt more than a little stupid - again.

if you know the secret, why'd you bust your window?

I keep a magnetic key box on the inside of my rear bumper. Saved me twice so far. You can get duplicates made (assuming you have access to the original) for a few dollars at some hardware stores and the magnetic key boxes are around $5 or so.

This will prevent your situation in the future, may seem useless now, but you may thank me later. :)

I have a tried and true method for keeping from locking myself out of my vehicle......

And it beats the so-called "tricks" for opening the doors.

It's very effective too.

When I get a new-to-me truck, one of the first things I do is go get some keys made - whatever it takes to make FOUR complete sets. Some of my trucks have five sets.

One set goes on it's own keyring - that's the main set that I use for the truck. One set goes on a ring so it can be put on the carabiner that carries my misc keys (keys for various padlocks I own, the equipment keys, etc). Thus I keep two sets on my person for whatever vehicle I'm using for the day. If I have to use two different trucks in the course of the day, both sets for both trucks go with me all day. The set that goes on the carabiner usually is hooked to a belt loop, thus unless I lose my jeans, the key can't be locked in anything.

One set stays at home in an old cigar box all the time. The key sets for my parts trucks are in that box too. And the final set stays with my parents - thus if for some strange reason I'm locked out of my truck and can't get to my set at home, they can easily bring me a set.

My other tools include a cellphone and AAA, which I found will work to get a free ignition key made on site (I bought a newly used truck 100% legally but the guy lost the only keys to the truck - AAA sent out a locksmith who made me a new ignition key on the spot so I could drive my new toy home).
