So I went to the you-pull-it salvage yard today and there was a complete 97 merc mountaineer awd 5.0 . so I grabbed the power steering and bracket and the alternator and bracket.. I got the upper intake throttle body injectors, fuel rail, and Monday im going back for the lower intake and heads ...

so my question is now this ... do i have to use a ac unit with this setup .. I haven't been able to locate a ac delete pulley .. is there just a shorter belt i can use .. and to i need to get the water pump and timing cover off this motor too.. ??

Yes, you will need the timing cover and water pump.

And I'm sure you could find a number of ways to route the belt.

Just remeber that the heads on this most likely will be the P heads and getting headers to fit them and the swap is going to be hard. I am currently doing the 5.0 swap in a 84 Bronco II and found that it was easier and cheaper to build my own headers than to get a set made to fit on the P heads.

Some people will tell you to look for the early year heads but my engine is a 2-97 build and it had the P heads on it.

i already have regular gt40 heads that i got off a 96 exp.. but im gona grab these cause i can get them cheep and even sell them to make some cash for the rest of the project .. but I do think that they are just gt40s not p's if i remember the p's have 4 lines on the end and the the gt40s only 3 and these heads have 3...

yea if you can get them cheap and make a buck on them to help you project I understand. If I did not have so much time tied up into my project I would switch to the gt40 heads that I picked up this week-end but I got the P's all done and on my engine and the headers almost done so I will just keep the non P's for another project.

Yes, you will need the timing cover and water pump. [/IMG]
Teddy, is he going to need the crank pulley also for proper alignment, just don't have access to all the options like you always seem to.

The identifier I always use the the mark near the bottom right head bolt. The P head will say "GTP" in the casting, while the GT40's just say "GT".

And being a 97, it could have either.

I have heard of people using 90* boots on the offending spark plugs to get around having to have the expensive (especially for a Ranger) exlusive headers.

You will need the entire fead setup (harmonic balancer/crank pulley, water pump, alt, ps pump and the brackets for it to work. You can just delete the ac compressor and short belt it. You will need a 830k6 belt, 825k6 will work, but is a little tight...

well i got everything off but while pulling the timing cover off the bolt hole by the coolant passage cracked so now im on the hunt for another..

If its not completely broken take it to a metal fab/supply shop, they can weld it for you for probably less than the price of hunting another one down...

That's kind of pricey, but is an option...
