what do you guys think about the factory limited slip offroad? i have a limited slip rear in my truck now with 3.73's and it will spin both tires on dirt but when i really need the torque it becomes a 1 wheel wonder. im thinking a rebuild with more clutches? any of you guys upgrade the stock limited slip? im not going to buy an aftermarket locker just probly pick up some more clutches or shims at the junkyard.

sounds like youve made up your mind. I had a l/s and yes it would become 1wd at times, but thats why its a l/s and not a locker. Thats why i bought a locker.

but with more clutches or shims it should be almost the same affect as a lock rite and should only disengage while turning. seems all the other limited slips are great and fords kinda sucked stock. the one in my fifth avenue would hook both tires great.

If you do the extra clutches thing and shim it as tight possible it makes a big difference but it's still an l/s and not a locker.

Couldn't have said it any better! Why ask for advice/opinion when you are set on beefing up your limited slip. In the end a locker is a guarantee, not a "I hope it doesn't slip when I need it"

i dont know if your on a budget, but here is an equation for you.

time=money
time spent in a JY finding parts + money spent on JY parts + time spent installing JY parts / risk that what your doing may not help > money spent on locker + time spent installing locker x knowledge that you know a locker will work

I think it fails to no end. The trac-lock limited slips are worthless offroad even when new. I'm going on my personal experience here, but when a ford with a limited slip gets in a flex, the flex overwhelms the clutches and it becomes a one wheel peel. If you're going to upgrade the rear end, do it right the first time and install an actual locker. Once you experience the benefits of a locker, you'll wonder how you ever put up with a limited slip.

the limited slip is in. doesnt engage on roads but dirt and mud it works great with the extra shims i put in. makes it real easy to do doughnuts. i have found that ls is not a replacement for good tires but made a huge difference over stock. to put in the rear end with brand new brakes cost me around 100 bucks and about 4 total hours of labor with hand tools only. i dont plan on going with a locker on this truck because it will only occasionally see offroading in the form of muddy roads. when i get my 1st gen i plan on going lockers front and rear with it. but for what my current truck is going to see the ls is working fine. most ill probably do with it is about 1.5 feet of sloppy sticky mud. with tire chains on it the truck went right through like it was only 3 inches.

Was it the new carbon fibre clutches and did you install them clutch, disc, clutch?

Id like to hear more about the L/S upgrade.

My 2 w/d ranger didnt come with a L/S so Im planning or swapping out to a 8.8

This will be done more for winter conditions, but want to ensure the L/S kicks in when needed.
