Limited Slip 7.5 Blown Spider Gear

when you replace the gears, honestly, replace all 4, not just the 2 that blew...

I know I should... But I haven't found the side gears for a ls diff on the internet. Tomorrow I'll call ford and some parts guys and see. I'm sure I'll find them somewhere.
But I'm on a major budget now so if its more than $150ish I'm just gonna swap to an 8.8 form the junkyard. I'm on a part time Publix budget lol. I make next to nothing.

i just replace them with junkyard ones:dunno: they aren't critically timed or anything and will wear in.

get the pin and side gears, i usually broke them a few times till a pin let loose or the gears locked up in the r&p and that always totalled the diff.

depending on how the yard is setup its a 1/2 hr deal and 20 bux.

another 10 for lube and an hour to install, you need lube either way.

tracloc gears and pin may be over 150 depending on where you find them.

for 150 bux may want to consider a bit more investment and just get a drop in locker and you will be at least improving the situation with minimal cost/headaches. of course the 8.8 is always staring at ya.

i know where you're from buddy!

you can probably get a 95+ with disks for it for 150 too!

just MAKE SURE you get a rear with the same ratio as your front already has, if you don't you're gonna blow your t-case

t case? hard to see it failing.....front diff and axles definitely....t case would already have to be wounded to die first..

when i was wrecking these 7.5 regularly, i often had mixed ratios on occasion.

Yeah, I know it's a pretty common problem, but I want to know if The spiders are the same in the LSD and the open diff... I don't know if Ford intended on the LSD unit being serviceable or not. I'd like to just buy one spider if i could... Its the one on the top/bottom of the unit that broke, not the sides.

And I didn't think a stock 2.9 with 200k could break this diff. I read on a mustang forum that they can handle 350hp, but I now know that's bs. Or else i should go dyno it and see if my 2.9 is putting out over 350hp... lmao :icon_rofl:

Yes, presuming you have the "S-spring" type limited slip axle yes,
the spider gears are the same in the open diff.

there was another type of limited slip used from '83-early 85 that uses different spiders, those grenade all the time, the friction is in a cone like an auburn, yes auburns usually fail be grenading too...

both the 7.5 & 8.8 use the 28 spline axles that are the same diameter unless the 8.8 is from an explorer.(Pinion bearings, axle bearings and axle shafts are exactly the same)

or the fx4's... they have 31 spline also

full size use 31 spline

mustangs i'm told use 28, but i'm not completely convinced... might make for an easy rear coil conversion to use a foxbody axle...28 spline (possibly 31) 8.8 roughly the right width, usually with trac-loc (not including the 4banger's with the 7.5)
