I like to see if anyone here has any ideas on this .I built my own 4 bbl intake for tha 2.8 I had and like to try this-----don't have the $$$$$$$ to buy one.I think I can do it,with your help.

Are you saying that you are wanting to make an intake to put on a carb for and engine that originally came as EFI.

If you are you are not thinking straight. There is a reason vehicles got away from carbs.

You will not get any kind of benefit from doing this mod except emptying your wallet.

That's what I'M saying,I like things that are diffence----that's just me---September 2003 Street TRUCK OF THE MONTH

What he said! The parts to perform the conversion will have to be custom. When you are done you will have a system that is not as efficient, powerful, or as maintenance free as the efi setup already on the truck.

the last guy that asked about this got banned hahaha. what youre trying to do is literally pointless

i UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ALL SAYING bUT i WAS TOLD THE SAME THING IN 2003 WHEN i built the 4 bbl intake for the 2.8-just had to see if it could be done

Yes.

There is also the matter of a distributor, which the 4.0L has no provision for....

Eh, I bet if he got creative enough a distributor could be fitted in place of the cam sensor. Same principle, different part.

I still think the whole idea is ridiculous on it's face.

Yeah, why doesn't he just come out and say it... er wait a minute

Wasn't a 2.8 Carbed anyways??

2bbl though, I thought I heard they quit making the 4bbl intake (Offenhouser) a couple years ago.

If you can carb a mod you can carb a 4.0... and you can carb a mod.

Personally I don't think a measly 4.0 is worth the hassle... but that is just me. :dntknw:

Since there is really no aftermarket intakes for the 4.0 to compare to, you might really improve it if you do a good job. The 4.0 is well known for making torque at a low RPM... intakes that favor this usually don't bode well with overall performance. Even in EFI stuff, the intake on a 302 in a Crown Vic or truck was much different than what was in a Mustang or in an odd irony an Explorer.

There is a carbed intake for the SOHC. I think it's a 2bbl and costs about $900 tho.

Why not get the 2.8 carbed motor and build it with .30 over pistons, highlift roller cam and roller lifters and rockers and a Holley carb replacement. It might cost less to do this then try to carb a new 4.0. (don't really know about the cost of course). I did the build to my old 83 2.8 Ranger and got a lot more hp out of it and it was such a pleasure to take to Moab and other offroad events with the 33x12.5 tires. Just taking it on the highways was a pleasure. The truck loved to run and it pulled so great hauling my boat and bike trailer or my offroad trailer. I could not do that when it was back in California of course due to the tight emissions. But when I brought it back to Florida I was able to build it up. I got it re-registered in Florida and was able to take it back to San Diego while stationed there and drive it legally. I did all the work (except the boring of the motor). I had to take it to a buddy's machine shop. I started off with a cam and carb upgrade (Holley carb). There was a lot of difference in the power and torque with this setup alone. I drove that Ranger cross country a few times and never had any issues with it. That was a great Ranger. I bought it in 84 with less then 10,000 miles on it. I kept that truck for a long time and then sold it to a pretty Army girl who kept leaving me notes on the windshield every once in awhile in the Tampa area. She kept asking me to sell it to her. She was in the Army at Mac Dill AFB and that is where she saw it.

I'M still wanting to do some work on the 4.0...I got a 5.0 v8 4bbl I just built it's still sitting on the engine stand, got to get a tran and some other parts, going to put it in a 1993 Ford Explorer---
