I'm in the middle of repairing the damaged fiberglass on my 90 B2 with the spare tire carrier. I want to continue using the tire carrier so has anyone had any success beefing up that area with some steel or other material? If anyone has links or pics, that would be great!

I reinforced mine with a pieceof 4x6 1/8inch steel. Drilled all the way thru the door. Held up pretty good

Do you have any pics of the steel reinforced liftgate? I scrolled through your rebuild posts and didn't see that part. Thanks...what part of the door did you attach the steel to? I'm thinking of a way to attach it to the steel frame part of the gate, so there's not the stress on the fiberglass from the spare tire bouncing all the time:icon_thumby::icon_thumby:

I run. Waterjet for a living and cut myself out a couple titanium sandwich plates to reinforce the area around the latch. I've been running it like that for 6 months with a 33 inch spare and it has held up great. I have some spares cut out if your interested in a set

I''ll post some pics this weekend. Aint no biggie, just put some steel over the crack.

I actually like the sandwich idea!

They turned out pretty nice. I busted out about 10 sets. They use the original mounting bolts and holes as well as 10 quarter inch bolts around the perimeter. If anyone is interested in a set shoot me a pm.

This cost me a dollar for the metal, 20 cents for the nuts and bolts.

Sandwiching would probably be better, but this has held up

There are 2 different styles too as you can see from country's pic and the one 4.0 posted. If you have the 2 bolt one, I'd find a 3 bolt one. Thats what I have and haven't had any problems keeping a 35" spare on it.

You mean you reinforced the outside and inside "sandwhich style" what size and thickness are the plates you used..yes I'm interested!!
