So I blew up my 4.0 a while back and I'm doing a quick rebuild on my spare to replace it, when I took the heads and all that off I noticed the lifters have little cone shaped things on top and 2 of them are broken. are these needed? could I leave it or do i need to replace them, they seem pointless but I'm no 4.0 expert. sorry I cant get a picture I'm at work

Please let me know I want to get it together tonight

I first noticed them when setting up Hyd roller lifters for production in the 2.8. It looked like they were used to lessin the chance of a pushrod not engaging the lifter during assembly.
Wanted to use the 4.0 lifters in the 2.8 but the drilling of the grove for the antirotation design in the 4.0 was shut down by production.

so you are saying they are just for assembly and I will be fine if some are missing? just pay special attention to them

These cups ensure that your lifters stay well lubricated, they help catch oil. So preventative maintainence would mean replacing them so you don't run a lifter dry and have to replace it in the future. These lifters are pretty pricey so for what it's worth go the junkyard and get some replacements.

I guess I'll pull 2 out of the blown up one when I pull it out
