I'd like to put a little bit of a lift on my truck so I can put 31" tires on it, but I don't want to get crazy as I can't really afford it. I saw this on E-bay

Listed under: Ford Bronco II Explorer Ranger Complete LIFT KIT 4WD and listed by Hammerhead 4X4.

I've got a 90 Ranger XLT 4X4 with the 4.0 L V-6.

Was wondering what you folks thought about a kit like this? It's basically front spring spacers and rear add-a-leafs.

My buddy asked would I have to worry about drive shaft alignment or anything else on the front axle or rear axle? I've read that I would need an immediate front end alignment? Anything else I would have to worry about?

I'm only planning on doing easy cow-trailing (SUV trailing) types of stuff, just thought 31's and a little more clearance would be good.

Thanks for all the help,
Dan'o :}

the rear add a leafs wont affect your driveline angle very much, but the front coil spacers will throw your camber off pretty good. You might want to try the washers under the spring method

OK, I'll look around for info on the washers. Can you advise what type of washers?

LOOK IN THE "TECHNICAL LIBARY" AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE

then look under levling kits and lifting for cheap give's you a few options.

myself I dont like things have have a stud extender(unless it a hot blonde....) and those things have been known to wear out and split.(ahh the spacers not the blonde)

no matter what way you lift the truck on the cheap your going to have to get a aligment to get caster and camber back in spec. expect to pay 100-200 for the alighment.

Thanks for the info. I did a quick look around but didn't find what I was looking for, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

With the price of the kit, the shocks, the alignment, then tires and wheels, this is getting to be a little more than I can afford right now. Maybe I'll just stick with 30"s

Have you thought about just doing a body lift, then?

Cheap and easy, and I have 31's on my 91 w/ just a 3" B/L and they don't rub at all, even fully stuffed........

Just my .02.......

I did a body lift a long time a go on a Dodge D-50, and it was a big pain as the wiring had to be moved, the shift lever went down and I had to cut a hole so the shifter could make it through it's movements. Didn't really care for it. I've also asked a couple of other guys and they said the same thing, so I'll stick with suspension for now.
Thanks for the thought though.

Maybe just try an inch or two body lift plus an inch in the front. When you BL just a little bit you dont really need to change too much. I have a 1 1/4" BL in my truck and soon to have 1.5 coils and I run 31's and its fine. You could also trim the fenders a bit too for extra room.

You said mild off roading so I wouldnt be too worried about major clearance underneath, bigger tires raise your diff (which is your lowest point) and the room for them to move is about all you need.

I took the truck out for it's first off road run last weekend, which was only easy fire roads. The trans seal was slightly blown, now it's completely blown. Plus I am having problems with the heater vent making noise now. I really don't have the money to do wheeling and fix the truck, so I'll just fix the truck for now and use it as my around town hauler. Later, when I get healthier and get a little more money, I'll start doing stuff to it. It's nice to know that a short body lift won't cause problems though.

ive never had any real issues with doin even a 3" body lift on a truck, sometimes u just have to open the hole in the floor up a bit and put a nice boot down, but thats usually the extent of it
