I about pissed my pants today. Ever since $4 a gallon gas I have been doing extensive research as to the "most economical speed", accessories and driving habits to enhance fuel economy.
I just finally found the best formula, if you are interested just post in this thread, but I drive a:
1987 Ford Ranger
Shortbed with fiberglass Leer Topper, freshly washed and waxed
2.0L with a 5 speed
Stock tires(35 psi, +/- .5) with a CRACKED exhaust manifold
This is my findings:
I have found out that Overdrive is utterly USELESS(engine needs more torque!), and with easy acceleration with easy deacceleration driving 53 mph in 4th.
The topper does not make much of a difference(since I am driving at a slow speed to reduce wind drag)
I am able to acheive 28 miles per gallon! I double checked my calculations, dam that is impressive for a '87 model.
This is not just one time, I can reproduce this several fill ups(maintaining a standard). I am thrilled, I would say my truck is running top of the game!
For a comparison:
1984 Ford Ranger longbed 2.8 v6 I get 18-20 mpg
a 1988 Oldsmobile cutlass Ciera gets 30mpg with a 2.5L tech4
So I find it impressive that my "Brick" can even come close to a aerodynamically, FI designed car.
