How much could I expect gas mileage to drop from a 3.0 to a 5.0 IF I also swap my crappy auto transmission (that can barely handle the torqueless 3.0) with a nice Manual transmission (Possibly a T-5 from a foxbody Mustang?)

Basically I want to go from 3.0 Auto, to 5.0 Manual. And I want to know the MPG drop I should expect. Right now I get around 20ish.

It really depends, a properly geared 5.0 should be able to manage 20+ MPG hiway in a ranger.

If you drive it without the heavy foot you'll be able to achive those numbers or close.

:nono:Yea, but with all the new found power, his right foot's going to weigh about the same as a lead brick.:icon_rofl: It'll stay that way for quite some time too. :icon_cheers:

Oh trust me, I would force myself not to romp on it too bad after the first week or so, I would need to save up for my fiberglass fenders and cowl hood. :icon_thumby:

Depends how you do it. If you do a stocker fuelie motor, you could probably achieve 20. You go carb, and you can most likely kiss that goodbye unless you know wtf you are doing(which most carb owners dont...they just like to turn screws and say 'wow i got so much hp now'.
But I learned my lesson from my built 302 in a ranger.....a lot of fun but too much money. Id go 4.0 anyday now for sure.

If you go with a small carb with an EFI hyd roller like Ford's F4TE cam(1994-2001 5.0 cam), it's definately possible to get 15-20 mpg.

I built a 302 Ranger that got consistant 18-20mpg with a carb and an AOD. I didn't drive it, my grandfather did. So you if you build it mild to stock and drive like an old dude it can be done. If I drove it I never saw over 15mpg.

Alright, so besides the Engine and tranny, what other parts would I need to change in the truck in order to do the V8/T5 swap?

I'm trying to get a figure in my head of how much this is going to cost.

well for your 93 2wd probably 5.0 from a explorer, tranny that compatible ,wires, comp, a drive shaft maybe stock but more than likely custom. your truck should have an 8.8 rear axle and i think you should be ok, but maybe not cuz its 2wd and may have a 7.5 axle

The 7.5 rearend wil be ok as long as you don't put drag radials on it.

How do I tell which axle I have?

And I would probably need to regear the rear too. Right now I think I have it geared stock at 3.45 since the axle code is 84. What gear ratio would you recommend?

What ever price you come up with, figure double that. Don't worry about the rearend, it'll be fine for a while. You can get to that much later. As for the driveshaft, that will be the last thing you'll need to address. You won't be able to figure it's needs till after you have the engine and transmission in place and bolted down.

So far on the list of stuff I need to price I have a 5.0 and preferably a T5, both of which I could find in a fox body mustang. What manual tranny did the 5.0 explorers have? The M50D right? Anyway, only 1996+ explorers came with the 5.0, and that's a little too new to pick up cheap. So looks like it would be an 80's 5.0 Mustang instead. They're quite common around here. I would also need to pick up a tach, or a instrument panel with one in it.
