Hey everyone I'm new to this forum but a long time ranger owner. I recently purchased a 2003 4x4 ranger. It has a manual trans & 4.0 v6. I'm used to the tuff 2.3. My question is can I get a donor truck with the 2.3 & the bolt it with the computer and wiring of course to the 4.0 trans and still have my 4x4. The power is good but the fuel economy sucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I had a 2005 4x4 ext cab with the 4.0, 4.10 gears, manual and could get 20-22 mpg on the interstate doing 72 mph. They are heavy trucks and not sure how the "little" motor would do. Good luck whatever.

Welcome to TRS...

I haven't seen anyone doing this swap...so it may not be worth doing...the newer 2.3 might fit the 4.0 transfer case, but I've read where the old 2.3 won't...so measure twice and cut once...

No Ranger engine that was available in 2003 except a 4.0 will bolt to a 4.0 trans without an adapter plate.

The transmission engine breakdown is as follows:

2.8, 2.9, 4.0 match

2.3 Lima and 2.5 match

2.3 Duratech

3.0 Vulcan
