left rear tire lock up

went outside earlier to move my dads truck off the driveway which is on a slant, got in her, pushed the clutch in and started her. i expected her to roll backwards when i got off the brake, but she stood there like if the parking brake was still engaged, so i got out and had my dad press in the parking brake while i inspected the lines. nothing wrong, so burning the clutch i gave it the gas in reverse and the left tire skidded across the driveway while the right one pulled it along. so we blocked and jacked the rear end up and pulled the culprit tire off along with the drum, still wouldn't rotate freely by hand with the transmission in neutral. i prepared my self for the worse, an exploded differential. i unscrewed the diffs plug to drain the diffs fluids and the axle decided to start rotating freely again? i only got a little oil out and now its fine, what the hell caused this bizarre thing to happen.

Until you started talking about your diff, I was thinking rear drums seized.

I have had that happen before - just give it a good whack with a hammer and it frees right up. Although that is a sign the brakes need to be done.

It may have been the drum, I didn't have the trans in neutral when I checked for rotation after I broke the drum free.

How long had it been sitting it is possible the e-brake was sticking also. if the brake shoes and drums look good and the e-brake locks both wheels and then releases put a little grease on the flat spots where the shoes touch the plate. If unsure just replace everything wheel cyls, shoes, drums, and hardware.

Maybe 2 nights through alot of rain which we still need more of. The truck was given to us with a brand new clutch and had been matienced fairly well. Except for the rust brown coolant which we flushed and double flushed out. God it was nasty.
The brake pads seemed in good condition alon with the drum, but there was a crap load of brown rusty brake dust in their. Dad says he went though alot of puddles on the way home but that would affect the right tire more than the left.

Again, leaning towards seized brake drum. It happens, just get some new shoes. The shoes and drum rust together, its not an uncommon thing to see here. It happened to me and a friend within like 3 days lol

If you dont have money for shoes for a few weeks or something, keep a big hammer in the truck so you can wack 'em if needed.
