Leaking fuel tank...

After 2 failed repairs (patches with fuel tank sealer), I'm pretty much done attempting to fix this tank. The leak is in a hard to reach spot (even with the tank dropped). I've dropped it a few times and patched it, the patch holds for a few months and then opens back up again..

The leak occurs toward the front of the tank, in the center seam, right under where the metal shield clips on.

I found a supplier for the tank other than the local JY, It was actually pretty difficult to find a place that stocked these poly tanks.

Has anyone done business with MTS Company, LC?

http://www.mtscompany.com/ford.htm

They have a nice selection of polyethylene fuel tanks for RBV's, and amazingly are one of the only suppliers I could find that sold them. I will be visiting the local u-pick yard to see if this is a problem with lots of the Ranger tanks or if I just got lucky. :icon_thumby:

Anyone else had this issue? What was the best route of repair? :icon_confused:

MTS wants $163.95, free ship for the 4216a 17gal tank.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

While your truck MAY have the 17gallon tank... The FACTORY 21gallon tank
(stock on ALL 1991-97 supercabs)is a direct fit in an '89-97 supercab.

the 17gallon tank is the same physical tank used in all lomngbox rangers from 1990-97

Is the sending unit retained with a large plastic ring or a flat metal ring?

Plastic retaining ring = 17gal
Metal retaining ring = 21gallons

The 21gallon tank extends over the driveshaft center support bearing crossmember.

Yeah it costs $10 more to fill but you have to fill it less often:)

BTW, the pickup/sending unit is physically different.

If you decide to upgrade to the 21gallon tank get your sending unt from a junkyard 93-94 supercab.

they use the seme sender resistor and the factory unit is made of stainless steel so the lines will NEVER rust apart on it...

You sir, are the man. Thanks for the information, I'll be upgrading to the 21gallon. Awesome, thanks again!

So, the MTS part for the 21gallon tank appears to be 4252A. I'm guessing that it's listed as 19 Imperial Gallons, which works out to be about 22.8 US Gallons. Sound right?

I will check the junkyard first for a 21gallon tank and sending unit from a 93-94 SC in good condition before shelling out the cash for a new tank.

Off hand, do you know if the tank straps are different between the tanks? I would guess so, but not entirely sure and can't find any pictures to reference yet..
Thanks!

I used the same straps when I upgraded

My 17wasn't original either, my truck is an '87... or should
I say WAS an '87 when it was built...

And originally came with a METAL 14.5gallon tank and that just didn't
make me happy....
