i have a 2001 ford ranger extended cab 4x4 ,while on a trip the rearend started making noise ,the shop said they had t replace the gears and are charging her 6.4 hours to do it this seems like alot of time to me as i took auto tech in college and used to work as a mechanic

replacing the gears in a differential is actually quite a long process, fine tuning the backlash and such can take quite a long time for someone a little inexperienced (Some shops wont even dare to touch them because of the complexity of getting it perfect). An experienced shop would be able to do the job properly in i'm guessing 4-6 hours

Hmmm...at $95 an hour...may be cheaper to get a replacement rear end...

Time is right. The tech can do it faster than that, but doing it faster than book time is how they make there money.

You nailed it! That's how we make extra money. Of course when business is slow it's a lot harder to make any money but it usually all comes out even.
