mine is busted, and it seems an impossible-at-best little thing to find. is it really worth the search? or am i chasing a shadow?

Mine broke, too, and I never replaced it. Can't really tell that it makes a difference, not being hooked up.

You need it if you have the original ignition.
If you're asking location: Lower Drivers side toward the rear of the block.
It sounds like you need a manual too.

Ha! No, I know exactly where its located...what I meant by hard to find is where to buy. I re-soldered the original, but it has seen it's last day. i don't see any difference with it disconnected...ignition is original.

Check out www.northernautoparts.com P/N: 5S2203

I spent about 3 months looking everywhere else, then checked out northern and found the knock sensor for 2.8ltr fords

You may get lucky and find one at the bone yard but not very likely. I am just guessing on the price before clicking the link my guess is around $110 new if you can find it.

Wow that is crazy cheap if you buy it be careful on how much you tighten it. The best way to test if it is working is with a timing light watch the timing marks while the engine is running have someone tap on the block with a big wrench right next to it the timing should retard with the tapping. It will throw a code if it is not working during the goose test. If all your computer stuff is working correct the knock sensor will noticeably improve performance and fuel mileage. It constantly monitors detonation and retards the timing under a load then as the vacuum pressure raises MAP it advances the timing accordingly.

RockAuto is about $35. - as someones said - get a manual. Testing by part replacement gets expensive.
All parts need to work together for the best results.

kim- i was surprised at the price as well when i ordered it. I wouldnt have even been looking for it in the first place but the kid that was working on it for me while i was not around broke it among other items costing me more $$$ for my rebuild.
