Hi, everyone. I'm glad I found this forum! I've had 3 Rangers, the last one for 7 years.

Here's my dilemma:

2004 Ranger XLT 4.0 with automatic transmission and, I believe, a Borg Warner 1354 transfer case. It has 72,000 miles, and 4WD used only on snow or occasionally, wet pavement. I live in Denver, and use the 4WD a little bit on most snowy days. I'm very cognizant of the drive shaft rotation speeds and the stress on the shafts, hubs, and transfer case when turning, and try to avoid using the system on dry pavement, or in sharp turns with good traction.

Recently, it has developed a intermittent noise similar to running over a wire or cable across the road, except it doesn't go front-rear, it's simultaneous. It only happens with 4WD engaged, or shortly after moving the switch to 2 HI from 4 HI. I'm not sure if the transfer case immediately disengages when the switch is moved since there's no lever that moves gears, just, I think, a solenoid or something. In any case, I don't know what the time lag is between switching from 4 to 2 and vice-versa, so I don't always know if it's in the selected mode.

The noise occurs about every minute or two, and I can almost feel a slight, momentary loss of traction on one or more tires in the split-second that it occurs. It feels like a rear tire, but it's hard to say for sure.

What's going on? Do I have a problem that will leave me walking? Any advice will be appreciated!
