So I am looking for some "cheap" health insurance for my kid. Since I am now paying child support the state requires me to have private insurance on him, and the free insurance through the state is "not good enough" for some lame ass reason. :annoyed:

I know some of you have gone through this before...what does one do here? I can add him to my insurance through work, for only $579.80 more a month! So obviously unless I want to spend 35% of my income on that I need something that's actually affordable.

"family" option?

Did you look at a form or did you talk to your insurance person. My individual add is a little less than yours - but I can add "family" coverage for $130.that will cover all my kids. That wasn't covered on the paperwork I read through.

I talked to my company insurance rep for that figure. She said that to add one kid to a policy that covers a single male is expensive. But if I was married to my kid's mom she would be covered and it's a lot cheaper. She actually told me that I should not go through my work insurance for him.

I got the shaft in my divorce too....however my insurance for my 3 kids is only $180 per month....Do you guys have Farm Bureau? They are reasonable.

Most states have some sort of CHIP (Child Health Plus) coverage for kids, which my ex had when they lived with her. How much you pay depends on how much you make. If I had my daughter on it I'd be paying full price (with what I make) and it would be $160 a month. The coverage is pretty good.
I just got some sort of college student policy for my son that only costs $364 twice a year.

look into those insurance companies that advertise on t.v. i cant remember the company i used to go through (Alliance??? maybe). theres a ton of them out there. its pretty basic coverage, unlike what you probably get through your employer. they dont cover doctors visits or any preventative maintenince, strictly emergency situations eg. if he/she breaks his arm. it may meet the courts requirements and it was only about $80 a month for me. it'd work great if you could still keep the state insurance with it.

hopefully Obama sticks to what he promised and really tries to get some affordable non discriminatory insurance to us.

You should be able to find decent ins. for less then they want at work. Sounds like they were putting the screws to ya.

Got it taken care of...here's the story. My work insurance is expensive because it's a group deal, and I guess because group deals really only cover sick people, you pay far out the ass for adding people.

So I went down and talked to an agent from Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He said it would be $68 a month for just my kid. So I set up an appointment to get him covered, and called DSS to tell them what's up. The guy who I've been working with there said that normally if you have insurance offered through work, they force you to use that unless you have other coverage. But, because through work is more than X% of my income, my work said hell no, so DSS isn't enforcing that part of my court order, and he will still be covered under state insurance. Woo hoo.
