Key won't go in!

The other day I went to move my truck and I couldn't get the key to go in the ignition. I tried moving it around and eventually it went in. The next day I had the same problem so I looked in the ignition and I could see a piece of brass in the way so I used a small screw driver and was able to move it so the key would go in. That worked for a couple of days. This time I used a pick and got the piece of brass out. This is a picture of what I got out of the ignition, does anybody know what it is ???

Weird. Does it work now, with that piece of stuff out of it? Do you think it is part of the cylinder?

Have you left it sitting unlocked anywhere? Someone trying to borrow it???

It works fine, some kids were in it a few months ago but I don't think they were smart enough to hot wire or force the ignition. They didn't even take a CD or a cell charger. The piece looks like it is a contact from a switch but as I said it works fine.
