Tore into the front end found out that the slide in key is missing. Is it THAT oimportant. Or can I go without it. Also my inner wheel bearing was the worst I've ever seen outer was in great shape.

If tou want your tire to stay on, yes it is important.

Where can I get one without buying a whole new assembly

No clue really. I forget if its an odd shape or just regular key stock. If its standard, then lowes or homesleezeball should have it. Adam should be able to pull the ford p/n.

Otherwise, junkyard. You could pick up an extra locknut thingy too.

Ford wont have that. It is kind of an odd shape, but lowes might have some.

Junk yard is best bet. I will have a pair free eventually, but I don't know when. I plan to swap to manual hubs.

Why not swap manual hubs in, and just get rid of the key locked nuts...?

You dont need a key if the manual hubs have a double locknut. Check out the warn conversion kit to compare images.

It does have double lock nuts. Which is why I thought it would be fine. Sometimes ford does weird stuff didnt know if the key was there on both auto and manual hubs.

The manual hubs don't have the key chip. They have a nut to set bearing load, a key-wayed washer, and then another lock nut to hold the whole thing together.

IIRC; The washer in between the two nuts has a key-way that rides in the slot. The inner nut also has a pin that fits one of the holes in the washer locking everything in place. Then the outer nut is torqued to 150 ft/lbs. Elsewhere in the tech section is a recommendation to up the torque to 225-250 ft/lbs.

I've had the outer nut back off even past the torque spec. It chewed out some of the hub material (nonfunctioning casting) and was a pita to clean and repack. Just gotta check them periodically. And be careful torquing it down, its easy to have that 4 prong soclet slip off and strip the nut.
