I have a 94 4.0 with the 5 speed. I was driving home on the freeway doing about 70 in 5th gear and all of s sudden there was a lound clunk and then power loss. Look at the tach and the motor has died. Started the motor back up, and let out the clutch and it dies again. Coasted down the off ramp with the motor running and the clutch in and was able to finagle it into second. Came to a stop sign and went to shift into first, it came out of second, but wouldn't go back into any other gear. Pushed it home and it will know go into first, but the truck wont drive. It will just bog down and die. It has been making a pretty loud screeching noise in all the gears except for fourth, or when the clutch is in. What possibly broke?

Does the shifter feel smooth and locks into each gear? how does the pedal feel? is the fluid level good?

What have you checked so far?

Sorry for the delay, life has ben crazy! Pedal feels good, engagement into each gear is good, and fluid level was fine.

On an interesting note, I have another '92 2.3l ranger that I have been driving since this one is down, and it started to do THE SAME EXACT THING! Luckily I was able to get it back into gear and baby it home to find that it only had about 1/2 a quart of tranny fluid. Filled it back up, and it has slowly been getting better.

Another interesting thing, I have been trying to drop my tranny and I can't get it free from the motor block. I have triple checked to make sure that all bolts are gone, but I can't get it to seperate?

So, to get the tranny out, I had to have my little brother push the clutch to the floor. Does that trigger any thoughts for anyone? Also, bought the slave cyclinder for the clutch, but I can't get the old one out. Along with that. I took the tailshaft housing off, and the top cover for the tranny. Found that the bearing closest to the front of the truck, just behind the slave cylinder is shot, and the gear just behind that (towards the rear bumper) has some pretty serious wear. Anyone know the names for the bearing and gear so I can buy the replacements? Thanks!

Input shaft and Input shaft bearing... you'll also need a counter shaft.

Might as well get another transmission. How was the fluid level? These have a tendency to leak out the top plugs

Thanks for the info. Fluid was pretty close to where it should have been. I get wholesale on the parts, and the cheapest junkyard tranny I could find was $500. Is this still gunna be the route to go?

Not sure what tranny you have, but I had to replace the tranny on my 88 B2. I found a rebuilt tranny with bell housing, 2 year unlimited mileage warranty for about $700. Mantrans.com is where I got it from. Just another suggestion.

id look at the clutch cable, or maybe its time for a new flywheel, if teeth are missing that could be the problem it can cause it not to engage or disengage all the way and that could cause the truck to die..

you could repair your transmission if the rest of it is in good shape, my thoughts were just that since you had such a failure the rest of the transmission might not be worth fixing..

not a single word of this makes sense.

I have the same problem...makes a bearing sound in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th. The other day i was shifting 2nd to 3rd and it clunked, hard enough to make my tires lock up,Got it back into 2nd and then everything worked normal.it has locked me into 4th twice and sometimes doesnt want to go into 2nd.im pretty sure its just a matter of time until it grenades....anyone have a tranny for sale?????
