I'm saving up money for my list of mods on my anticipated ranger, one of the ones that will come the soonest is the snorkel since it's a relatively low cost.

But.. how do you keep the rain out of it when your driving around? It's gonna be my daily driver 6 months out of the year soo... that's a tad important.

The head is pointed down at an angle, any moisture that goes in either evaporates or goes out a small drain valve if it has one

I'm referring to doing 70mph down the road when it's raining. Crawling through a trail it should work fine, I'm not sure about the highway though.

you dont.

i dont.

Well, should be a guy gluing PVC instead of welding but you get the picture.

I stumbled on Camodown's setup earlier. Now I'm thing that would be good, but instead of having a valve just on the stock intake, perhaps putting one on the snorkel would help to keep water out too? That way I could run the stock intake in rainy daily driving, but still have the ability to park and close that off when wheeling. I'd have to get out to turn hubs anyway.

The only other option is doing an in-cab snorkel. But I don't want a hot air intake..

Sorry for the crappy photos of crappy sketches, but it's the best I can do without CAD on my bedroom computer and my scanner being on the other computer as well.

Here's my idea on paper. Well, camodown's idea with my idea added to it. The only way I see this causing an issue is if the snorkel is FULL of water *will add a drain valve to it perhaps* or if I somehow close both valves, in which the truck wont run all too nicely. I'm trying to think of a way to mount them that would cause them to be mechanically interconnected, but I don't see that as an option at the moment.

ok.

maybe i was being too rhetorical.

dont put a massive funnel scoop on the intake. no problem.

just pull air from the cowl. rain water isnt an issue at 70 mph with a 3 in opening the only valve you would want is a bypass in case the main inlet actually did get a flush of water.

How about just running the pipe up the "a" pillar then pointing towards the back vs the front. It would work kinda like a cowl induction hood don't you think?

Me being the redneck I am would try something like this:

You would have to pick what diameter your pipe is and try to find a precleaner that is the same size. They suck air from the bottom so rain while either going down the road or parked wouldn't be a problem.

here is an idea, make your intake turn towards the bed or do a 180* turn so that it faces down.

Or you could face it towards trhe opposite side of the truck, like if it's on the drivers side, face the scoop towards the passenger side. Or like mentioned above have the scoop point back down, like a full 180 bend. Just an idea.

I've been running this setup for over 3 years and have never had any issues with water in the airbox or a wet filter. Rain, snow, wheeling, never any issues.

The cap is a furnace b vent from home depot, open 360 degrees, covered on top.

watch out, if you back up any more your going to destroy the mailbox with your mirror!

I know that the Safari Snorkel ones are designed to not suck up rain. the mesh over the opening breaks up large rain and what little does go inside is forced out the water/air separator thing.
