K&N vs OEM Paper Airfilters

Many purchases, and not just filters, are made for group acceptance. Everyone of my buds has a K&N, I buy one so I won't be different plus I can now join the pissing contest.

What would you do if all of your friends bought Tornados?

I don't want to start anything here, but if one of K&N filters problems is the oil but they supposedly help, wouldn't something like this be the best? http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eaa.aspx
I just found this one day on the Amsoil website and thought it looked like good stuff. I've always been an Amsoil fan tho so my opinion could be biased Haha.

Lots of opinions (and even some real data) on "bobistheoilguy.com). There is a whole section on air filters, oil filters, etc.

Hmm, seems like the amsoil filters aren't that great. Also for some reason I thought they didn't need to be oiled. That is a very interesting website tho.

I don't know what this has to do with anything, but I would think it is none of my business. It is their money, they can buy anything they want.

I have an eldely gentleman down the street. He has a 86 Bronco. I keep it running for him. I was working on it one day and noticed he has one of the fuel line magnets on the fuel line. He saw me looking at it and said, "What do you think? A big waste of money, huh?" I answered that I didn't really know as I had no experience with them, but it certainly didn't hurt anything to try them.

Now I could have said, "Yeah, they are pieces of shit, and you wasted your money. A fool born every day." Not only would this have been very disrespectful(it's his money and he has no knowledge of automobiles), but he would have felt very foolish, embarrassed, and I would probably have lost a friend, and for what................massaging my ego, and showing the great knowledge I think I have?:)shady

You said you bought a K&N to fit in with your friends. Would you do the same with a Tornado?

My point is, that's a bad reason to buy a part.

I was speaking in the third person,.........:)shady

Hypothetically--I got that.

You know what?

I think any mechanical object is a piece of shit and I hate it. I've been struggling with mechanical objects my whole life. I fought with VWs and old Fords as a boy--fought with howitzers and 5-tons and guns as a professional--fought with tractors and saws and yard junk as a home owner--fought with RBVs and vehicles as a vehicle owner and had my butt kicked a time or two. And if my truck takes a lump or two of dirt down the intake it deserves it and I don't care. It's a piece of shit anyway. As far as I know the Virgin Mary doesn't live under my hood and I don't give a dmn about my truck so screw it. If a tree falls on it I'll pound out enough space for me to sit and keep driving it. My cylinder liners are not holy relics and I curse them to hell and hope they die a death of grit and filings. I just don't care about the objects.

Ok, just to continue the comparison. Plexiglass tubes were used to make smoke machines. Carbon resistors were used to generate the smoke. On one end of the tubes was the filter media, and there was a fan on the other end,
which was not needed. Just the convection air flow off the resistors (smoke went straight up to the filter media) was enough to see the difference. As
you can see from the third photo, the OEM paper filter media blocked the smoke, the smoke went right through the filter media on the K&N:

So I shouldn't expose my truck to secondhand smoke?

I'm going to post this over here as well!

This last so called test, has a very serious flaw, & actually explains why a paper filter requires several times the area of gauze to flow an equal amount of air.

Your small area of paper has nowhere near the porosity as the same area of gauze. Of course the smoke wont pass through easily, or at all.

Try it with 5.5 times the paper & show your results!

Sorry, you are dead wrong! the filter efficiency will stay the same, you will just get increased air flow capacity with the additional area. In the experiment the air flow was very low, just the convection off the heated resistor.

If your thinking was correct, the full size K&N would be passing marbles!!:D:D
