Just Plain Stupied

Cupholders? In the '36? that's just craziness!:shok:

those plastic 99cent cupholders have been holding up realllllllll good for the last 2 years.......

I'm gonna hafta put a DEPENDS on my rear end..............

wiat.....wait.....that doesn't sound right....

let me x-plain.....

the manual said to put some gasket sealer on the splines of the differential when re-installing the pinion flange....

I thought "they're crazy!".......so i didn't do that....

now i got a little puddle of oil under the rear end when it sits overnite....(on my wiffes new concrete driveway)

:annoyed:

but............it's only a 15 minute fix.....(so--shouldn't take me moar then a month to get it did)......... :yahoo:

At first I thought that i damaged the new pinion seal when I installed the new gears....but after washing the oil film off a couple times...I realized the oil was working it's way out thru the shaft threads past the pinion nut & flange....

then i remembered (too late) that the pinion splines should have been degreased & coated with a gasket sealer---which explains why the flange was stuck on the splines with some reddish-orange dried up goop....

I cleaned it off a couple days ago...the bottom of the differential was coated in oil.....

O.K.

I did it.......during half-time of the LSU/Tennessee game.

I "sealed" the pinion splines to stop the oil leak on the front of the rear end.

Pics tomorrow....meds have kicked in....i'm too cross-eyed to paste pics tonite................... :icon_surprised:

Hell, that's half the fun! :icon_rofl:

O.K. pics of the repair:

4 bolts are removed from pinion flange.....driveshaft is still in A/T to prevent fluid spill while working on rear end....(notice the threaded plug on the left-center side of the Diff. cover...I added that to make it easier to refill the rear end....I'll drill & tap a lower hole to quik-drain the rear end....but not today...

STREETROD001-5.jpg

I removed the big nut & pinion flange...cleaned the grime off the flange...

STREETROD004-3.jpg

I coated the inside splines of the pinion flange and the splines of the cleaned pinion shaft with gasket sealer....let it all cure for a few minutes until it got tacky...

STREETROD005-5.jpg

I re-installed the pinion flange & torqued it properly....you can see my foot/sock on the 1/2" ratchet applying the correct torque with my right leg....yep......that feels like 10 lbs. of resistance when rotating the assembly...

STREETROD006-4.jpg

refilling the Diff with gear oil....don't that look a lot easier......

STREETROD012-3.jpg

It's full!!!!!

STREETROD013.jpg

I plugge the fill hole.........and let the truk sit overnite to give the gasket sealer time to cure all the way......

Now.............to find out where the leak is coming from in the engine area....

GREMLINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the size of the oil puddle....about the size of an......OREO....I'm guessing the oil sending unit is leaking...(no smoke has been rolling off the engine....so the valve cover gaskets must still be good!)

Hell, that's half the fun! :icon_rofl:

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahhahahahhahhahaaaaaa

thanks...............now i don't have to edit my last post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:icon_rofl:

:icon_bounceblue:

EDIT: I own a Harley Davidson.....it's got enuff leaks! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhahahahhahahahhahahhaahaaaaaaa

Re-Edit: O.K. sending unit was O.K......oil filter was dripping & needed another 1/2 turn......also--I decided to put that drain plug in the bottom of the differential whilst I had the truk off the ground.......pics tomorrer!!!!!!!

O.K. where was I..........doing the Diff. drain plug....why?......cause I keep my vehiles 20 to 60 years & I wanna change the gear oil after a lot of heavy towing or every 5 years....just because.

Here I am drilling a hole hopefully not directly under the ring gear...

STREETROD0012-1.jpg

Well....see'ins how I loaned out my brand new tap-handle & didn't get it back--It's time to use a wrench to turn the tapered pipe tap...

STREETROD002-5.jpg

Now for the 3/8" threaded plug.......

STREETROD003-7.jpg

O.K......buttoned up the cover/filled it with new gear oil (threw away break-in oil from the gear swap I did a month or so ago/cranked it up--throwed it in gear & let it roll on the jackstands for a while....

STREETROD0052-1.jpg

No drips/whines/ grinds......... :yahoo:

I thought the 7.5 and 8.8 rear ends (well I know the 7.5 have them) fill plugs on the fronts of the diffs by the pinion. They use a square extension for a socket wrench that takes them out.

I just cant remember what rear end your truck has.

As for the drain plug, not a bad idea. It seems to be another thing for the tech library IMO.

Mine has the same leak at the pinion flange. My dad and I replaced the seal years ago but dont think we put the sealer on the splines hince the leak, but nothing that drips or gets everywhere but enough you know its there. And maybe enough to keep the ujoint oiled too.
