For those that are interested, and have the 31 spline 8.8" rear axle, Torsen is running a sale on replacement FX4 units right now. Nearly half price: https://torsen.com/product/ford-8-8-31-spline-t2-copy/

They do mention this for some reason:

"Preloaded Torsen Type-2 differential for Ford Ranger FX4 (Level 2) with 31-spline 8.8” rear axle. NotIRS compatible. This part is a direct replacement for the OEM-installed Torsen used in the 2002 – 2008 Ford Ranger. TBR: 2.1/2.3 Drive/Coast. This is for 31-spline axles only, and only fits Ranger models originally equipped with the Torsen differential. It can, however, also be used in Explorer/Navajo/Mountaineer models from 1991 – 2001. Will not fit Mustang axles."

I can't see why a guy couldn't buy one and install it in any 31 spline 8.8" rear axle?

Anyway, I thought it was worth posting for everyone since it's a killer deal. Love or hate the Torsen, there ya go...

I can see where it would cause issues in the Explorer IRS diff. I don't think you'd get the circlips to lock in. Mustang IRS is probably similar.

It says NOT IRS COMPATIBLE

I also said "rear axle" not rear diff.

Just sayin..

Wow. What a price! Wish I had the disposable income to get one and put it in mine.

I assume the non-FX4 are not 31-spline?

Shame they don't have them for the SLA on sale, I'd have been all over that.

Thanks for sharing!

Correct assumption on your part... most have a 28 spline axle.

If i didn't have a need for replacing my welder... I would probably just buy one for a future upgrade.

That is a great price. I have 241K miles on my rear Torsen and am tempted to by a replacement as a spare. However, mine still works like new and I would probably be foolish to have a spare taking up precious space when they are so durable.

Does anyone know if this unit will accept the stock ABS 8.8 tone ring?

I thought that by the time the FX4 Level II's came out (2002) the rear ABS sensor(s) had moved from the differential ring gear to the axles - am I wrong? I sent Torsen a message several days ago asking about tone ring compatibility and will report back what they say.

Edit - I may have answered my own question - Rock Auto shows a single rear sensor in the diff at least through 2008.

Yes, they accept the abs tone ring. 100%

I purchased and installed one on my '04 Sporttrac (solid axle) It was a perfect fit and even the gear lash was identical reusing the same shims.

@gw33gp positive comments on this and other threads about his Torsen helped me make the decision.

I had some back and forth before ordering. This is the most relavant information:

"Thanks for contacting Torsen. I believe that the -9703A differential will be on sale through the end of the year. This part is essentially already out of production, this is leftover stock from when Ford offered it as an option on the older generation Ranger."

Given that this is NOS, I wanted to make sure I wasn't buying the faulty, recalled versions from 2002. This was the response:

"Yes, the recalled parts were purged from the system back in 2002, when the issue first arose. Everything that we have remaining is from late production, circa 2010, when Ford discontinued the previous Ranger model."

I am very happy with my purchase. I noticed gobs more traction immediately as it was snowing on my test drive.

I'm still almost tempted to buy one just to have... but I have to keep telling myself I already have 3 complete FX4 Lvl II axle assemblies lying around lmao

Hua. My 'sploder axle that's mid rebuild is from a 1999.

It's currently a limited slip. Is the torsen worth the cash over a regular l/s?
