was recently given a 3.0 out of a 92 aerostar. Only 20,000 original miles, well maintained. Can I use it in my 1993 ranger ? If so what has to change? Any advice greatly appreciated

No, you can't use it in your ranger. You might as well just send it my way so I can use it in my '93... lol, just playin. You'll be just fine with it.

Some states have emissions laws requiring the engine to be the same year or newer than the vehicle, just call your dmv and ask them about it so you don't end up spending time and money on something you cant register

what the dmv dont know dont hurt them , and it only applie to OBD II cars , which are 96 - up , pre 96 they cant plug it in and tell if the engine , i know this because i live in New York , one of the aforementioned states

+1, what the DMV doesnt know wont hurt them. there ARE ways of telling what year the block is (cast-in serial number), but they will have no reason to suspect its from an older rig since its the exact same motor as whats currently in the truck.

I checked the Hollander interchange and this is all the applications that the Aerostar engine will fit.
AEROSTAR 90 6-183 (3.0L, VIN U), from 3/26/90
AEROSTAR 91-92 6-183 (3.0L, VIN U)

HERE ARE THE APPLICATIONS THAT WILL FIT YOUR RANGER

1993-1994 6-183 (3.0L, VIN U), 4x4
Compare oil pans and front engine accessories before interchanging.
Electrical & induction systems vary, compare and switch as necessary.
4x4.
|A|, |B|, |E| & |F| fit by switching attaching parts. CONSIDER LABOR COSTS BEFORE CONVERTING BETWEEN FWD & RWD.
|C| fits by switching upper intake & left exhaust manifold, oil pan & pickup tube, valve covers, fuel lines, timing cover & distributor.
|D| fits; difference is oil pan.

Wow, only 20k mi. on a 1992... and I thought I had a low-use 3.0L... yeah, Aerostar is RWD, should work in your Ranger... THEORETICALLY... barring possible belt-driven accy diffs... and INTAKE diffs... and EXHAUST diffs... I'd say use your Ranger's existing PCM and harnesses.

But seriously, while it'd be a shame to open up a low mileage (barely broken in) Vulcan mill with no known problems, now would be the time to add forged pistons and forged rods to handle that SUPERCHARGER you'll be wanting in the future. :icon_thumby::icon_welder: LOL...

Please keep us posted... I B needin' 2 lurn all I ken 'bout engine swaps. :icon_twisted:

where are you finding forged pistons and rods for the 3.0?

the aerostar engine wil fit in a ranger or taurus. ALL 3.0 long blocks are the same. the differences are minor external ones (and head gaskets between FWD and RWD). the intake manifold is the same, its just bolted on "backwards" in FWD form. as long as you have your original 3.0 engine, you have any valve covers, oil pans, and belt driven accessories you might need to switch.

Never looked, but just ASS-u-ME'd that for any such long-time mass-produced engine, SOMEONE makes aftermarket upgraded internals... yes/no? :dunno:

Anyway, pretty much tongue-in-cheek, as I thought I'd made evident.

If I needed a new Vulcan, and got a 20k creampuff like the OP did, I'd just say "YESSSS!" and slide her in there, bone stock. :icon_thumby:

the aftermarket support for the 3.0 leaves something to be desired. im not aware of anyone that makes forged rods or pistons for it...or you can bet id be making around 300 hp :icon_thumby:

and then you use the old one to build a hot stroker with a supercharger , that puts out like 900 horse , but no , in all seriousness , when i blew mine up i kept the block and all the other good parts with every intention of building a race motor , now i just have to get the money

I knew SOMEONE was "on the case"... lol.
