ok so i just bought a ranger the other day. its a 1994 XLT 4x4 4.0 auto. it is stock and has basically every option. the only one i can think that it doesnt have is fog lights. it does have high mileage tho. 262k eeek (thats what the odo says but who know if the motor has been replaced or not.) but it runs and drives great. picked it up for $1300

there is a slight tapping/tick commin from the engine. it comes and goes. like it will tap for a little then be quiet then tap... im assuming its just the lifters. once it heats up it doesnt do it nearly as much. i just changed the oil aswell i used GTX 10w-30 and a bottle of lucas.

i will be changing the transmission fluid soon aswell. (i did this in my old 94 4cyl 2wd ranger before)

but i am a newb when it comes to 4x4s. as i have only had a 2wd ranger which i sold for my 89 5.0 mustang (DD).

i would like to change the fluid in both axle housings aswell as the transfer case. this is where i need the help. i am not sure on where or how to do the transfer case. any help would be appreciated.

also what is the largest practical tire i can fit with the stock suspension? right now it has 235/75/15.

and here are some pics:

Hey, nice truck good deal. Mine has a lot of miles too...
You will like it. I suggest getting a haynes manual. Rear fluid change is the same as you stang, front end...can't remeber. And I am not sure on the tranny, I have a 5 speed.

Something to keep and eye on with 4WD is you automatic locking hubs, they suck, and check you front axel u joints....if they haven't been changes yet, I am sure they are shot.

BTW, this is 50stanger from MF

Some of the fluid change stuff is right in the tech library of this site.

If you do a search you'll get several threads about 4.0 tapping.

Welcome aboard. Nice score on the truck.

i have 255/70/16's on my 1993 xlt 4x4 3.0 if that helps any

heres a pic if you want a reference

the only problems that it has that i know of so far is a crack in the windshield, a bad passenger side read cab body mount (well all the body mounts aren't great but the bolt moves on this one) and the power steering hard line is leaking. but me and my buddy (plumber) are gonna replace it soon. and the rear tires should be replaced but still have tread.

id like a set of 30" AT tires for the 15" rims.

actually a 235/75/15 is basically a 29" and a 255/75/15 is a 30" and a 275/75/15 is a 31"
