So i just bought a 88 ranger with a 2.9 4wd 5spd. i drove it abouot 15 minutes and then got on the interstate. drove about 5 minutes and it started to lose power, i pulled off in the gas station, the fuel gauge doesnt work, and filled up it only took 3 bucks. got back in the truck and it wouldnt even turn over. I had it towed the house and decided I would try and crank it again and the solonoid is ticking when i turn the key. Do I start with replacing that? I have never heard a solonoid do that...... thanks

start with checking the battery, make sure it is fully charged.

clean the battery post connections & make sure your grounds are all good. If the battery isn't fully charged, it'll make the solenoid click, so will bad battery connection.

get the alternator and the TFI (aka ingition module) checked. more so on the alternator.

Replaced the starter and the solonoid! Runs like a champ!
