I am putting in new head gaskets and all new stuff from there up.. The question is there is a lot of gunk inside the intake manifold from the throttle body back is this normal or is there something else wrong with my engine that I need to fix besides the head gaskets? Any help will be greatly appreciated...

Gunk buildup in the intake is not uncommon, especially in older engines and with higher mileage. Not a bad idea to clean out but probably isn't related to any threatening cause.

id have to say its mostly because of the egr, all of my engines have been like that, but more so on the egr engines. dont worry about it.

I'm not incredibly up to date on emissions systems, but did they even have EGR back in 86?

Ironically 86-87 were EGR equipped. As far as I know 88-92 had no EGR.

Even my non-EGR 88 has crap build up in the upper plenum (EGR isn't the only thing that is getting put into "circulation").

Make sure your EGR port is clear at least. Gas mileage will not be optimal with a malfunctioning EGR.

You might also inspect the vacuum lines while they're out and make sure the EGR tube to the exhaust isn't cracked or rusted through.

Interesting. Learn something new every day. Ya my throttle body plate and upper plenum have some buildup, I'm assuming from EGR. What else can cause that gunk though?

PCV, Breather, tiny tiny stuff making it through the filter, Evap canister (gas fumes), etc. Depends on the vacuum setup I suppose.

Mines not so legitatmit, my vacuum routing is as simplistic as it could possibly be. The driver's side intake vacuum tee was removed and replaced with a brass plug since I didn't need vacuum to MAP anymore. Heated intake, airbox, etc are gone (wish I would have retained it, didn't know any better). There's no cruise control from the factory, nor A/C. I lost my canister vacuum line that connects to the bottom of the TB (blocked now). Basically all I have is PCV, FPR, Auto Trans, and Brake Booster. Easy to find vacuum leaks though! ;missingteeth;

The build-up usually comes from one of the crankcase vents rather than the EGR. The more the blow-by, the more gunk, but even a good running engine will get the build-up after a while just from the oil vapors. shady
