As fun and cool as the idea of scoring a completed Explorer axle in 3.73 with disc brakes, flipping it, getting the angle set IS..... (sound of heavy breathing) what is the most simple way to get traction to both rear wheels of a relatively stock 99 Ranger 4.0 with a 5 speed Automatic trans...never gonna go off road, drag race, do donuts....just don't like wheelspin on a rainy day.
The 3.73 is not out of the question since opening the axle on a 300 K truck suggests it might be time to freshen up things....but it's just a daily driver.
The real question is since some of the off-readers sort of dog the LS would do the trick OR would the long term (truck is very nice and will be handed down) fix be one of the lockers. I have used a locker in race cars but not on the street. If the prices are not that steep - which aftermarket unit has the best reputation.
