Hi everyone,

I've got a 1990, long bed, 2.9L 5-speed ranger, 3.45's. I was recently using it to tow my boat(15' fiber) and occasionally heard what sounded like detonation, when launching if rev's dropped below 1500rpm it sounded a bit like a diesel, and i got what sounded like the occasional pop past 3000rpm, it only did this once hot, so in otherwords in closed loop. Because of this i decided to check the timing for starters, spout out is now set at 10*, can't tell what it was before as the dizzy moved when i was loosening the bolt.

My real concern is the advance its pulling at idle, its very very jumpy with the spout in. It hops around between 12-20*, its also a little jumpy when free reving. The truck has always idled rough, seemingly in correspondence to the timing jumpyness. With spout out the advance is perfectly smooth.

Recent work includes head gaskets, 1 new head, one resurfaced, valve grind and new guides, intake gasket, IAC changed, new coolant temp sensor, new lifters. According to my mech gauge engine temperature sticks between 200-210f.

I'm wondering if this is a bad TFI, loopy ecu, bad sensor or of course any wiring inbetween? KOEO test gives all passcodes, will run KOER tomorrow.

I don't know if anyone here has looked at the EEC code the 2.9 uses, but if they have what is it using to determine advance? Coolant temp, rpm and vacuum? Could a vacuum leak be causing this?

The timing is supposed to move around with the advance connected. It's a function of quite a number of variables. If it moves around with the SPOUT OUT, then you have a problem.

Problems in this area generally flip stored IDM codes.

2.9Ls use a MAP sensor for vacuum (on the fender), a thermistor in the intake manifold (next to, but different from, the gauge temp sender) for temperature, and a cam sensor within the distributor for RPM. '86-'87s use a knock sensor for advance feedback; otherwise it's just computed.

my 2.9 is jumpy with the spout out any idea's were to start i already done TPS,IAC,MAF, any others i should look at also did cap and rotor and plugs and wires
