Josh40601's Build Thread. (D-ranged)

Almost forgot, putting the FX4 grille back on too. Just to see which one i like the best.

got a couple updates.

1. Talked to King today, gonna cost me 180 bucks plus shipping to have the shocks rebuilt and revalved. Was going to put new cans on too, but just can't afford it right now with Moab right around the corner. They will be shipped Friday, and should be back within two weeks. Just in time for the trip

2. Talked to the pops about the donor vehicle for when she is back in KY. The donor truck a 88 Chevy K2500 4x4 with a 350. Not sure what transmission, or if it is even good, but i know it is an automatic. If its the Turbo 400, then that means i should have the FF 14 bolt rear. If it is the 700R4, than that gives me the SF 14 bolt rear. Either way its a win in my book. The transfer case is the NP241 27 spline (thanks to Andrew for all the specifics!) If the trans is a 700R4, than im using that too. If not, going to try and find a 4L60or 4L80

3. Heads will be here tomorrow morning.

If it's a TH400 it may be a 32 spline tcase, gotta check as it won't work with a 4L60e, you'll need a 4L80e, or bigger. You've got $$$.... get a 6L90e!

I aint got the money for a 90. If its a 32, going with the 4L80. If its the 700, sticking with that tranny and t case, just have to buy the adapter to work with the flywheel and run the cables for the tranny.

Well today, i took the heads in, they are cracked.... Good news is the Ranger hasn't gotten hot at all this week. I did get the shocks broke down, and shipped off to King. They should be back at the end of next week.

John's heads, or your original heads??

Josh,
When I had my '94 built last winter we were going to reuse my old heads, Cracked like spider webs too. I ordered some from a guy in Utah that were the heavier castings. If my PTSD & TBI damaged brain serves me correct they were $300 something for the pair, plus ship. Sure shipping to where you are out there would have to be cheaper! And Brother Steve sent me pics of them before he assembled with all new valve train, Them castings were heavy duty! Motor has done great in Almost Complete, still running the 3.73 gears with lunchboxes front & rear & been getting 16-16.5 mpg on the highway.

johns heads. We tried, thats all i can say. Bray D has a set that he just rebuilt, gonna see how much it is to get them first.

Wow, his was a low mileage motor, and ran good, didn't over heat or get hot on the trails or nothing...Just hydrolocked his motor, bent #4 connecting rod both laterally and longitudely...
SVT

yea, he told me. I told the machine shop that. They completely disassembled the heads and you could clearly see, there was 1 crack on each head going directly across the valve seats on the two rear cylinders.

It sucks because he took the time to pull them, package them up, and ship them, and all he wanted was the money for shipping. It shows that there are still good people out there.... They are just 2100 miles away :icon_rofl:

Hopefully i can get the heads that Bray has, and get them on before the end of the month. If not, i dunno what i am going to do.

Just talked to Bray, getting his rebuilt heads. He is shipping them monday, so hopefully they will make it here by Friday, and i'll replace the heads next weekend.

Yeah, John about had a stroke when I told him how much it would be for me to swap his motor out, I think he thought I was joking at first. The motor out of the Pull A Part in Nashville (about 1.5 hrs from me) was about $160 with tax, and that's all I told him it'd be...Two weeks later when I could finally finish it after work hours and in between fire calls, I called him up and told him it was done...

Truck is disassembled. Shocks are sent off. Rear shackle is on the way (thanks Kyle!), heads will be shipped Monday (thanks Bray!), pulling the rear leafs out tomorrow.

The damage. Still can't open the tailgate. Have to beat out the corner of the bed first.

i know buddy, there are definitely no hard feelings. I am just very appreciative that you took the time out of your day to do all the labor in getting them to me.

Planning on using a ball peen once get the crease out of the way of the tailgate. For that, something tells me its going to need a little more motivation. ill try the little fella first, if that fails, pulling out the big guns.
