So I was thinkin about a diesel when the 3.0 in my 99 4x4 goes...
I found some info on the two CRDs Jeep has.

Grand Cheerokee
Spex: 3.0-liter, 215-hp/376 lb-ft turbodiesel V-6.

Liberty 2.8L
The Liberty CRD is rated 160 horsepower and
295 pounds-feet of torque.

What do you guys think about his idea? I am guessing that the 3.0 may be a little too torquey for my M50DR1... I was gonna try to use the same tranny and make and adapter bolt plate and an adapter for the shaft... Does that sound reasonable? My dad has a Mill/lathe, so I though it might be possible? Or should I just get a new tranny too? Do you think it is worth looking into? I think the 2.8 would be cool, but I have heard nothing about the longevity of these engines...

All the electronic BS would be a bitch, swap in a mechanical diesel, much more simple and reliable. Just my 2 $0.02...

the 2.8l liberty diesel has a problematic egr valve that is failure prone and about 400$ to replace

by that do you mean carbed? If so, I agree with you. I was looking for one w/o so much electrical, but the power rating on the engines I find is.....well, you know...

I like the idea of a OM 617 turbo, but i see numbers like 125 hp and 170ft-lbs. I guess that is ok, but if I am gonna go to all this effort, I want more torque than that....

No diesel's aren't carbed... A mechanical diesel uses a mechanical fuel pump driven off the gear train to fire the injectors, an electronic diesel uses a mechanical pump but a computer to control when/how much it fires, among other things.

2.8L Tdi POWER STROKE - International 2.8L HS

^decent info (edit - this site is based in South Africa - ".za" so they probably won't shit to the u.s..

I know a guy who imports them. Theres a moderate abount bummin in the U.S. and Canada, though not as much in the parts department. Though this sucker is used by the zillions everyelse in the world, so there is actually just about every part imaginable for them, but you'd have to get them from only one place that I know of (engine and parts):

Stephen Cahill
Old British Wheels Canada LTD.

They'll run ya about $6,000 but it basically a turn key engine. All accessories, alternator, p/s pump, starter, manifolds, etc. it's about as complete as your going to find. All mechanical and they aren't used either.

As for a stock tranny they use an Eaton 5 speed (actual model unknown), it's not used in america because it's not rated for -30° F. of course diesel fuel has issues itself at that point, but I can't tell Eaton what to do. Otherwise there's adapters for GM trannies, and I remember roumors about an adapter for a ZF transmission, but I haven't followed up on it.

Wow...there is some ignorance for you.... (on my part)I looked it up now though, and its pretty cool. I never understood IDI before!

So yeah, I was trying to stick with an American-market diesel so that I could get parts etc

So I guess I sound like one picky bast.... so maybe I should be more specific
1) American-market
2) I4 or I5 or V6
3) HP > 130ish
4) Mate with manual tranny
5) Mechanical would be much better

I think the Dodge Sprinter vans has some sort of I5 diesel in them. I know they're diesel but not much beyond that.

As for the above mentioned engine, parts are quite plentiful, just the corner parts store isn't going to have them (I.E. waiting a while). But I understand that it's still kinda inconvenient.

Could always go with the 4BT Cummins :icon_hornsup:

Like mine?....

Modern diesels are gonna be a bitch to swap, plus in the near future you could have emissions issues. Here, you are stuck if your vehicle is later than a 96...due to NYS emission testing. Your OBDII system MUST give a no code condition to the NYS computer or else YOU FAIL! and by failing you can't re-register your vehicle.

I want to swap an Onan DJC into a gen 1 ranger...mainly because I am very familar with the J series, and because I was told it can't be done. Need $$ now though.
