jeep 4.0 HO work in 89 ranger

With money and time a jet engine will fit :D Yeah, it would, you'll have to do some surgery though, there was a guy that did a Ford 300 I6 swap, it would be similar to that... I don't see why ya wanna put one of those in when Ford's OHV 4.0 is pretty much exactly the same and WAY easier...

This seems to pop up every year or so lol.

It will actually fit surprisingly well as long as your not afraid to cut up the firewall. The reason is the Jeep's oil pump will want to sit right on the engine cradle bracket. So you need to move the firewall back a good... say 4-6 inches (which also helps fit it in), somewhere in that range. You'll actually still have plenty of room up front for a radiator.

And that's just about as far as she'll go, it was an earlier pic, but it didn't get a whole lot farther. It's resting on the passenger side drop bracket right there, but eventually it did start to make it past it, only to then hit the oil pump, which is maybe an inch away on the right side there. Once you slide it back far enough, both will clear no problem.

But in the end it's alot of work and a V8 will fit a WHOLE lot easier. But if you have the jeep stuff laying around like I did go for it. I didn't have anything to mess with the firewall with so I abandoned the idea. But it can work.

I asked this question a while ago... I had a line on a free 4.0, I changed my mind... :D

yeah, basically I'd shy away from this unless you literally have it all already.

I think it would be a decent swap if the 4.0 OHV wasn't almost exactly the same hp/tq numbers at the same RPM... The Jeep 4.0 is just a space wasting version of a Ford 4.0... Kina...

ive heard it doesnt have as much torque as a ford 4.0

The 4.0 jeep engine has more torque if I remember right and about 30HP more.

I believe it has the same TQ as the 4.0 but it doesn't peak till 600RPMs higher than the Ford 4.0. They like to crack exhaust manifolds and sound like a hillbilly-mobile. The front is also a bitch to work on.

If you're talking about the Jeep straight 6, then don't waste your time. F--kin thing doesn't have enough power to get out of it's own way. My Neice has an 04 Wrangler with one, tried to drive it to Colorado a few years back towing a 500 lb trailer. After 60 miles barely making 70 mph and 9 mpg, I turned around and drove back and swapped the trailer onto my 06 Mustang GT. The Stang got 23 mpg @ 80 mph and never broke a sweat with the same load. Made up the 2 hours lost with the Jeep in the first 400 miles.

As much as I dislike the Jeep 4.0, was it a 5 speed? If so, it had 3.07 gears and that was the problem.

You are way off base, the jeep with 5.0 mustang injectors (more Fuel) will put out good HP and much more usable torque for trail work than a V6. It is also more fuel efficient.

I am building a crawler buggy when I return to AZ based on a Suzuki sidekick ragtop with jeep 4.0 Aw4 trans and scout dana 44 axles with jeep 4:1 transfer case......

Bingo we have a winner. The wrangler is not even rated to tow a 500 lb trailer. IT is designed for trail and moderate street driving use.

The 4.0 is one of the most durable motors ever built. I have personally had one over 350,000 miles and still all cylinders where within factory specs. I cruise my lifted XJ with 35" tires on the highway at 80 with the cruise set. I also used that same lifted rig to tow a 2500 lb trailer on my 1600 mile move From AZ to Washington. Power was never an issue
