Ok guys I have a 2000 3.0 and a whirrling/major screeching metal to metal sound mostly at idle when warm. nothing when cold. took the belt off and stays the same. new cam synch, new slave, new pilot. with stethiscope its loud as hell under the back of the motor and on the synch. What is it??? please help.

If its loud at the back of the motor and on the sync then something is wrong with it. Regardless of the fact that its new it can still be bad, did you buy a motocraft one or some off brand? Some of those are defective.

Pull it out and see how the gear turns by hand, if its rough put a new one in. The little bit of time it takes to check it out is better than a boat anchor for a motor.

Fair enough. Are you feeling that there is no other culprit?

If it walks like a duck and looks like a duck its probably a duck:) I wouldn't be able to tell without hearing it myself but if you said its loud on the snycro start there and if its as bad as you make it sound that I would guess you don't have much time. Maybe the one thats in there got some crud in the oil passage and its not getting lubed properly. Thats only a guess of course but pull that sucker out and have a look see.

Ok I shall tomorrow then. I can say other than this noise its runnin strong as ever and its just really loud when warm at idle and here and there when driving or revved. I will post what happens next. Thanks for the help!

Ok well I took it out checked it out and appears fine. Bought a new sensor, which I had not done and it is quieter but still has a major intermittent squeal/chirp during idle when warm. I have no ideas left on what the deal is. Anyone else?
