I have a 1990 Ranger 4x4 Auto with as 4.0. It is currently having issues. sometimes when I start it up for the first time that day it doesn't start or it acts like it has a lack of fuel and sometimes requires me to pump the gas pedal once or twice to get it to catch. Once it is started usually it runs good but it wont rev over 3k rpm's. Lately when I shut it off after driving it for approx 30 to 40 minutes and let it sit for over 20 minutes and I try to start it, it has a problem starting and when it does it wont rev for the first few minutes. When it has an issue after starting up it is usually that it idles so low that it dies unless you keep your foot on the gas till it warms up then runs good.

It is currently throwing a check engine light, I have tried a basic code reader and I couldn't get any codes thrown. I took it to a shop and they tried to read the codes with a Snap on code reader and they kept getting a snap throttle error(?) before it would read the codes, any ideas on that?

I have put new plugs, wires, and air filter in to ensure it wasn't anything simple. I am going to clean the MAS sensor and check the catalytic converters to make sure they're not clogged. Does anyone have any ideas short of start replacing the fuel injection parts till it fixes itself?

Also when it has issues it is not consistent like today it will do something (like fight to stay running) and I will do nothing to it and leave it sit over night and tomorrow it will work fine. Im running out of ideas

Check all your grounding points and clean them up. Sounds electrical in nature.

I checked all of the grounds and cleaned the MAF and it still has trouble starting after it is completely warmed up. If you rev the engine after it starts to catch it runs rough as if the timing is off and smooths out after a few seconds.

Ive tried everything to read the check engine light and it still give me the code any ideas on that?

when its not starting pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if its wet or you smell gas. If so your fuel pressure is bleeding out through your vacuum ports and flooding. or you could have injectors bleeding down either way it sounds fuel related to me.

TPS?? when you get a snap throttle error, then when you do the throttle 'goose' test it may not either be returning properly, or might not be reacting properly to the throttle...sometimes the spring goes inside the TPS or gets weak....then the voltages are off and may read wrong...and yeah...vaccuum lines..double, triple, quadruple check them....

We checked the TPS and it seems to be working correctly. Im going to check the vacum lines, I just need to grab a spool of hose before I try that

I might be with rags too on this one...sounds like you might have raw gas getting into the cylinders, leaking past and causing choking and flooding at start up...I don't know...weird issue....can you get a code number from the code you are receiving?
