my ford ranger is a 2 wheel rear drive 4cyl 2.3l with 215k miles on her.
she has the following problems.
she leaks tranny fluid and engine fluid...
i had the clutch/slave/master replaced.
the gear thing for the clutch makes this sound after being replaced where you can hear the gears working when you rev up the rpms on hills and in 5th.
she has some trouble going into gears,reverse, 1st 2nd but once she gets going she does ok. she has this other problem when coming to a stop the rpm's get really low when making some emergency stops she has even killed.
she vibrates at higher speeds 55-65 and i can feel it in my seat.
its a great truck ive done a ton of work to her all new tires,full size spare,new alternator,new fluid sensor thingy that sits above the alternator.new brakes,zenon bulbs, theres a buncha other things ive done to my truck i cant remember. i worked at a auto dealer as a service runner they only charged me 50/hr for labor and parts were 10% above costs. those toyota dudes hated working on my truck.
 
Do a cost analysis...how much will it cost to fix all those problems vs getting a new vehicle?

When you get into transmission and engine repair/rebuild....you are talking BIG money

The engine will likely outlast the rest of the truck. If it is given decent lube & coolant maintenance. Payments on a newer one will likely surpass repair costs in a few months.
If you like what you have, fix it. If you are no longer enamored, sell it and buy something you like. Remember payments will be there monthly...
I would check the drive shaft u-joints and the bushing in the tail housing of the transmission. If you have leakage from the rear seal in the tail housing, it might be the bushing is worn allowing the seal to get damaged, leading to leaks. Grab hold of the drive shaft just rearward of the front u-joint and try to move it radially to the output shaft. If it can be moved, bushing is likely worn. 215K isn't bad life...
Clean the engine, protecting ALL electric parts (ignition & alternator for SURE!) and determine where it is leaking, and what - oil or coolant? It may be a $15 gasket you can replace with 1 hour of twiddling wrenches. A lot less than new payments, but your choice.
If the tail housing bushing is gone, you can drive a new bushing in place, forcing the old one onto the output shaft. It will just sit there, and maybe rattle a bit, or not. New seal, and maybe the trans will quit leaking.
I would check that the clutch master & slave cylinder are bled of air as trapped air can cause difficulty in putting the transmission in gear.
Don't give up just yet...
