i have a 84 ford ranger, it first had one of the 4 bangers in there then it got a 2.8 before i got it and i didnt know the oil rings are/ were out so the motors toasted pretty much...

i found a 88 bronco 2 with a 2.9 and the guy said everything i need under the hood or under the dash for the motor i can have for 600 cash... is that a fair deal? i have the A4LD trans...

how much would i have to spend other then the motor to get it to run? i know the fuel pump is a issue and it needs a bigger one but it looks like its on the motor on the 2.8....

thanks

I probably wouldn't unless I was getting the whole truck. You'll need to swap the whole fuel system and etc. Going to be a tricky swap, not very many people do a 2.8 -> 2.9 conversion, so there's not much information available to aid you through the process. It would be a good idea to get a whole donor. If I was in that boat, I would just go with a 4.0L. It's going to be a little harder and a little more expensive, but it's an overall better engine. 2.9Ls can be a crap shoot, but I guess goes the same for any used stuff.

I've seen running 4 banger Rangers for $400, there's no way in hell I'd pay $600 for 2.9L conversion parts I'd have to pick. Donor is the only way I'd go, only because you'll get to a point and there will be a part you had wished you grabbed. Sometimes that can be a critial piece that will only cost you even more.

IMO

for less than $600 you can get a rusted out running explorer. then you have the engine, harness, gas tank, fuel lines, axles, dash, gauges, shifter, ...... basically all the parst you need for a 4.0L swap plus you can part out/sell what you didn't need and then scrap the body.

The explorer gas tank and fuel lines are utterly and absolutely useless to
swap a 4.0 into a 2.8 Ranger

Ditto for the same parts off of a 2.9 Bronco2

He'd still need an '85-87 fuel tank and fuel lines from an EFI Ranger
to complete either swap.

IF you are going to go to the effort of replacing a 2.8 with an EFI engine it
makes little sense to swap to a 2.9, the extra complexity of a swap to a 4.0
instead is nearly trivial by comparison.

$600 seems a little steep for what is being offered.

I paid $400 for a running (but wrecked) 1993 Explorer ten years ago
at the time it was a five year old behicle...
